I was thinking about picking up a "mauser" rifle but I'm a bit confused as to where to even look at general info for them. I think I've seen mauser rifles that were made within the last year or 2 and then I see the ones that were straight out of the war. What would be so bad about getting a new one? I'm just looking to shoot for fun, maybe a little hunting and a bottle or 2.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

Nothing wrong with it in original shape a bit odd caliber and dont expecet the accuracy to be especially good but it works fine for hunting at limited range, but at 100 yards you cant be expect to hit a bottle everytime.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

i myself have a mauser L96 i bought it used and found that it worked like a dream (however i'm still working on handloads for the best accuracy) but if you want the best of the best try the store Mitchells Mausers in Fountain Valley CA

I will challenge that statement. I own several mausers and they all will hit "a bottle" at 100 yards.

Mine is "Minute Of Soda Can" with off the shelf ammo.

How old is your rifle/where did you get it/what caliber (are there other calibers besides 8mm?)

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

Mitchells Mausers has some nice K 98s and the Serbian 48s. Our groups owns 4 of the latter, all scoped with EERs scopes in B Square mounts (4X max). All will put three in an inch or less with Seilers & Beloit factory ammo. Other than scope, they are bone stock.
Now if you can find a mint Persian long model 98 or a pre 1941 German K 98 you will really be in hog heaven.
Good luck!

Mitchell's Mausers has a pretty bad reputation. I bought a WWII 98K from Empire Arms and am happy with the rifle and a friend has used Allan's Armory and was pleased with his purchase. I've heard too many negative things about Mitchell's for comfort.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

Get a Swedish Mauser. 6.5x55. With hand loads most of them will do very close to moa. The target rifles even better.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I picked up a decent looking M48 variant for $250.00 a couple years ago. Everything with matching #'s but the bolt! Still, no head spacing issues so I guess the armorer who cobbled it together was knowlegeable or lucky!

I replaced the sights with Ghost ring sights, fore and aft, with removable aperture inserts. Better than the original sights but not enough to confirm or deny it is capable of sub 1 inch at 1 hundred yards. Trigger is not bad though for an old milsurp!

Definitely need to find the ammo that hits to the sights. Usually 196 grain 8mm. Also, exciting recoil with the steel butt plate! Not bad but noticeable.

Mitchell's Mausers is too slick for my taste. Don't trust them on principal. Like the assholes selling gold on a.m. radio talk shows I think they are liars!

There were millions of these 98s made. Look around and you should be able to get one or two good ones and not feel hosed!

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I like them, have a couple. Would suggest avoiding Mitchell's as others have suggested.

I like the milsurp lore, and the wonder of where the rifle has been.

I have not shot any of mine for target/match purposes, but wouldn't feel undergunned for hunting if my eyes were better these days for open sights.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I've got 5. A Turkish, Yugo M-48, German 98K (1941 date code), Swedish M38 (1941), and Swedish 1896 (1909). Of them my favorite is by far the M38 short rifle with the Yugo taking second. The Swedish 96 is a really nice rifle that shoots lights out, but it's a bit long for my tastes. My German 98k isn't bad. It's in about 90% condition with a mint bore, but I find that it's not as good a shooter as some of my others. Of course that's most likely because it's seen the most wear and tear in combat, but I'm just going by what I see...

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I don't know how much you want to spend or if you want a "keeper"...

Re: Sporter

I had a new Mauser M03 in .243. Beautifilly made rifle but I didn't go for the adjustable trigger option and the stock trigger was a real pain in the backside...very inconsistent. I managed to get sub MOA using Federal GMM .243 a couple of times but I never got to the stage where I felt I could rely on the rifle to perform. I sold it after a couple of years as it was just too frustrating.

Details on new Mausers are here:

http://www.mauserwaffen.de/index.php?id=home&L=1

They are pretty expensive (especially if you go for the new build 98's) and there have been issues in the UK with the distribution.

Re: Military rifle

I have a restored all matching numbers KAR98k (byf41 code) from Miltech in California last year...great guys to deal with, excellent standard of work and customer support.

They helped me source the rifle (gave me three alternatives to choose from that matched my spec and sent comprehensive reports/pics for each) and advised on all stages of the restoration. Originality, safety and "as issued" end product is their watch-word. Ed is always happy to talk about the project at all times of the day. They also do Enfield's, Moisin's, Garands....

www.miltecharms.com

If you are looking for a military rifle....I'd not hesitate to recommend them. They may not be the cheapest but they are far and away the best that I found on either side of the Pond.

My gunsmith in the UK is an ex-UK Forces armourer and part of his work is specialising in restoring classic military rifles - he has seen a LOT of Russian Capture and Yugo 98k's and he is knocked out by the work Miltech did for me. We did a side by side comparison with one of the RC ones recently...Night and Day!!

Here's pics of what Ed at Miltech did for me:

The only thing I have changed since I got the rifle is swapping out the original trigger for a Huber Concept 2 Stage adjustable to improve feel and consistency. Miltech had done a lot of work on the orginal trigger to get it as light as possible whilst remaining safe but it was still a "Mauser trigger" ;-))

At the moment I am trying varous factory ammo to see what it likes best...currently S&B 196Gr FMJ

Whatever you do...good luck and hope you find something you really like!

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

^ Wow, that Miltec 98K looks sweet!

I've got an early one ('37) that is all matching - but in really rough shape(stock and metal) that I had often considered having refurbed. Now I want to right away!! But I need another gun project/expense like a freakin' hole in the head!!

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

years ago i picked up an m48 in 8x57. no colletor value so i had it drilled and tapped for a scope, and the handle forged. with the military barrel and a bold trigger, it would place my handloads into nice little groups around 1 to 1 1/4". good enough for hunting or fun. i was at a gunshow last fall looking for a starter rifle for my son and picked up a sporterized venizuelan mauser in 7x57 for $75. someone had let rust on the outside, but the bore and action were prestine. once again, still had the military barrel. i mounted a scope and headed to the range with some loads i just threw together. it shot around 1 1/2". i have yet to work up a load for it, but i expect good things. i think the problem with most mil-surps ir the sights. it's hard to get a good group with military sights.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I have several K98's M38's and a VZ24 sniper.
The K98's will shoot 1-2MOA with no effort. The M38 is 1 MOA with irons. The VZ24 cost $89, I put a $100 scope on it and it will shot .5 MOA at 100 with my reloads. I hunted with that rifle for years. I think my favorite is the 1913 Swedish and it cost me the most at a whopping $129.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I have a swede for sale right now. I have it listed in a couple spots, so I can not put it on the Hide, per rules, but its over at 24hourcamp fire. Its a great shooter, I have another one, wich is drilled and tapped for a Pramm target sight, wich is what I have been after for a long time. Finally found a Pramm diopter, so I will probably never shoot this other Swede again.

Swedes are the only Mausers that are GREAT shooters, there were never any war time production of Swedish Mausers, so each one is done right, to shoot, not to make an ordnance deadline. They are really the custom rifle on the begining of the 20th century. Both mine shoot sub MOA with 142SMK and 4064.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

If you want a war Mauser its ok. But, if you want a hunting rifle, I would rather look at the commercial ones, from FN or Husqvarna 146 & 640. The Husqvarna 146 & 640 are built on FN actions.

The BRNO ZG-47 is my favoritt, and one of the best commercial mauser actions ever made!

Here are some of the better actions made, period!
I would rate them like this:
BRNO 21 or 22
FN Herstal mauser
BRNO ZG-47
Husqvarna 146
Husqvarna 640

You could buy a custom one, like Prechtl, Hartman & Weiss, Johannsen or American made from Satterlee or Graninte mountain.

But expect prices of around $4-5000.

Re: Mauser (kar98k) q's

I have a polish kar98az and am looking for a trigger guard. It is a small ring. Will a standard 98 trigger guard work?
Thanks
Michael
