I HAVE AN ZASTAVA 24/47 MAUSER.I WOULD LIKE TO RE-CHAMBER IT TO .458 WIN MAG,OR 35 WHELEN.IS IT POSSIBLE,WITH A NEW ADAMS AND BENNETT BARREL.HOW MUCH WORK WILL THE BOLT NEED?I GUESS YOU COULD CALL ME A SHADE TREE GUNSMITH.I USED TO BE A TOOL AND DIE MAKER BEFORE I GOT INJURED.ANY INF WOULD BE HELPFUL.

Re: MAUSER RE-CHAMBERING

To alter the bolt to .458 is simple...
But to alter the maglips and the feeding to work with .458 is a pain.

You would save a lot of money to go for .35 Whelen instead.

Re: MAUSER RE-CHAMBERING

For the 458 WM, it can be done, but it's going to cause some feeding problems. You will have to recontour the magazine follower and possibly open the magazine rails up. The bolt face will need to be opened up as well as the extractor

The 35 Whelen is a much better choice for "ease of conversion" and there isn't much that it can't handle short of large dangerous African game.

I'd take a hot 30-06 or a 35 Whelen for brown bear without much worry.

Re: MAUSER RE-CHAMBERING

There are lots of good guys that have helped me with mauser questions over at www.mausercentral.com. Trap55 is a moderator there and top notch with Mausers and what can and can not be done. Bob The Nailer and z1r are also both great Mauser smiths and can help you out too.

If you'd fill out your profile, I might even be able to get you a reputable Mauser smith in your area.

Re: MAUSER RE-CHAMBERING

BTW, if your dying to have a Mauser in 458WM, pm me. I'd be more than happy to let my shoulder buster go. Its no fun to shoot.

Or repair stocks for.

Or to feed.

Really its just not fun to do anything with but show your friends the gigantic cartridge and speculate what you could kill with it!
