None of my books list H-4350 under .260 Remington. What would be the maximum gr. of powder for a 140 AMAX? I have loaded up to 43.2 fine so far and wanted to know what is considered the max on this.
Thanks.

Re: Max Load for .260 and H-4350

142 GR. SIE HPBT H4350 .264" 2.780" Start 41.5 2590 50,100 PSI Max 44.5 2735 58,000 PSI

Now please note that this is NOT the 140 Grain Hornady A-Max. But you have loaded up to 43.2 grains, safely. So your MAX will be higher than that. How high? Only your rifle can tell you. And your MAX may well be different than 44.5 grains as listed per Hodgdon.

Your MAX might be lower or it might be higher than 44.5 grains of H4350. Max loads are listed in a book are a guide only. It was the load that developed MAX pressures in the rifle used by Hodgdon. You rifle is different, your lot of powder is different, your bullet is different, your barrel is different, your chamber is different, your brass may be different, in fact the only similarities are, both are .260 Remington's'.

Your rifle might swallow 45 grains or more of H-4350 before showing high pressure signs, or might show high pressure at 43.5 grains. In short, you develop the MAX load in your rifle by finding out what MAX really is.

Every weapon is different, somebody elses max, or book max will differ from your weapon, sticky bolt, ejector swipes, flat primers, the primer coned around the firing pin hole, when you get there you'll know. My 260 load is Rem brass, CCI primers, 41.7 H4350, 139 Scenars loaded at the lands, right now that's 2.190 Ojive, speeds around 2790

Yeah. Thats what I was thinking.
My load right now is 41.6gr H-4350 and 140 AMAX at 2.855" OAL using Remington brass and CCI 200's. I am getting incredible accuracy with it but only 2675fps...... I was looking to load hotter so I can get the benefits that the .260 offers.

With any of the 139-140gr match bullets, I get around 2820fps with 42.7gr of RL-17 and BR-2s. A 0.010" jump with the 139gr Scenar will barely fit in my Savage and AICS magazines, the longer Bergers, single load only. Pretty temp stable, chrono's about the same now in the hot Texas summer as it did this past winter. Shot a 0.4" 10-shot group at 100yds last weekend, I'm pretty happy with the load.

Re: Max Load for .260 and H-4350

I use 43.8gr H4350 with the HDY 140 A-Max seated soft into the lands. I get some, but not seriously pronounced, primer edge flattening and firing pin indentation cratering. With the L-W 28" 1:8" barrel I get 2850-ish fps, and have no intention of loading it any stiffer. Accuracy is excellent and 1Kyd zero is 28-30MOA above 100yd zero.

The SRA 142SMK likes the same load and performs very similar in my rifle, but that's just my rifle I'm talkin' about here, yours may not.

Re: Max Load for .260 and H-4350

Well, my barrel is still fairly new so im hoping with some more use it will speed up a little. Accuracy is not a problem at all, velocity was just bugging me. Thanks for the responses yall.

Re: Max Load for .260 and H-4350

My jug of H4350 is always 2 gr retarded for velocity and pressure compared to Quickload.

260
45 gr H4350 140 gr
Lousy accuracy.

45 gr IMR4895 100 gr
Great accuracy.

I think that the problem with the 140 gr load is my inability to consistently provide the same recoil stop for that light rifle with my shoulder and bags.

Re: Max Load for .260 and H-4350

In our short barrels (15") I used 44 gr of H4350 and had great accuracy with no pressure signs and this year dropped back to 43 and still have excellent accuracy in both mine and my sons new Lilja 1:8 XP. I got averaged 2525 in mine and he got averaged 2510 with his new barrel. It should increase slightly this summer.

Like others have said each gun is different, my buddy also shoots the short barrels but his max is 43. Each gun is different, close attention to what it tells you is what you go by. Sometimes that lil bit of extra velocity isn't worth the gamble when you only have to give an extra click or two to make up for it.
