You’ve spent a lifetime paying into Social Security, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll get out of it what you’ve put in.
In fact, the way things are looking today, the odds aren’t looking too good.
The federal government this week admitted that for the first time since 1982, it needs to dip into Social Security’s trust fund to pay for the program this year. You can interpret this as a warning that—absent action from lawmakers and this or the next few presidents to prop up the system—things could soon get worse—perhaps a lot worse.
Read: Social Security to tap into trust fund for the first time in 36 years
Here’s how bad: Unless something’s done to shore up Social Security, monthly checks could get cut 23% by 2034.

Six Factors That Could Shape the Midterms

Heres’s the part where you snicker “2034? Who cares?” But that date’s closer than it sounds, and besides, isn’t it easier to address problems while there’s still time—before they become even messier? Fact is, we’re now on a slope that’s only going to get more slippery.

The bad news doesn’t end there. This week’s report by the Social Security trustees—the head trustee is Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin—had even tighter time frames for other pieces of the social safety net. It said that Medicare’s hospital insurance fund will be depleted in 2026, three years earlier than it forecast a year ago. That means come 2026, unless changes are made, the program will only be able to pay about 91% of costs.
What’s going on here? Both of these gargantuan federal programs are being pinched in three ways.
First is simple demographics: the nation is aging, and there aren’t enough younger taxpayers to keep the system going like in the past. Last year, there were 2.8 workers for every Social Security recipient; in 2007 that ratio was 3.3.
Second: the new tax cut law has lowered projected revenue from the taxation of Social Security benefits.
Third: the trustees also say that President Trump’s decision to stop offering young undocumented immigrants reprieve from deportation while allowing them to work is also cutting into anticipated tax revenue into the Social Security program.
Read: Senior dads like Donald Trump can get this Social Security bonus
The news isn’t all bad. Trustees say another part of Social Security is actually getting better—the program that pays out disability benefits. This won’t run out of money until 2032, four years better than forecast a year ago. But that’s only because the growth rate in disability applications has fallen—a trend that might not continue.
That one brighter spot aside, there’s no doubt that these massive programs—some 61.5 million people receive retirement or disability benefits from Social Security and 58.4 million receive Medicare—are in increasingly perilous shape, and there’s little desire among politicians—from either party—to do much of anything about it. They simply lack the guts to tell citizens—i.e. voters—that sacrifices will likely have to be made. What politician wants to do that?
“The truth is as long as you have politicians telling people they can have everything they want, nothing will happen and it’ll only get worse,” says Maya McGuinness, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. She accuses lawmakers of “spinning myths” to voters because no one has the backbone to tell the truth.
Read: To fix Social Security, Congress would not have to raise taxes or cut spending by a single penny
Of course, these programs can be shored up through tax hikes, benefit cuts, or a higher Social Security retirement age—or some combination of all three. But the Trump administration has a different idea: faster economic growth. Mnuchin says tax cuts, fewer regulations, and better trade deals will boost growth and thus enough revenues to keep the programs going as they are—and avoiding the need for painful cuts or tax hikes.
None of that has panned out yet. The White House is now fighting a four-front trade war with America’s biggest trading partners—Canada, Mexico, China and the European Union—but so far, no new trade deals. As for economic growth, Trump’s own Commerce Department says the U.S. grew at a 2.2% annual pace in the first quarter of 2018, down from 2.9% in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Unfortunately, if history is any indication, they will make changes (increase taxes, remove the current tax cap, reduce future payments) and keep paying those already in it or soon to be in it the same. This is because the older you are, the more likely you are to vote, so the politicians won't bite the hand.

Kibbles are pretty good with mcIlhenneys Tabasco sauce, just like c-rats and mainly rat entrails...

    Buy more Tabasco!

I thought the solution was to raise the retiremrnt age? I forgot where I heard this (I think NPR) but around 1950s for every 5 people only 1 lived long enough to pull from SS. Now that people are living longer they need to bump up the age again, probably by decades this time.
In this day and age with all the information that's out there on maintaining health, barring somekind of terminal illness (alzheimers, cancer, organ failure and the like) or major traumatic injury (parking garage collapses on you), if someone is not able bodied into their 70s then that's the fault of that individual.
The work that needs to progress humanity (not social progressivism but space travel, cures for diseases, etc) is less physical, more knowledge based and there is no reason you cannot work longer.

If my SS is not there qhen I retire I will personally be knocking on some fuckin doors . And I do mean visiting a motherfucker at home . I can kick some serious ass before anybody shows up to help .

Anyone that ever depended on SS for retirement was an is, a fucking fool.

Agreed, but thats not the point. I payed for it just as if I had bought a home, or any investment. Its fucking mine, not theirs to steal. We should garnish the check of every congressman and senator to help pay back what theyve already stolen and put them to the whip on the rock pile until its fully funded. I hate thieves and parasites.

Not me, fucker, I voted for Tricky Dickey. Besides, youre an older fuck than I. And uglier.

You were taxed just like the current generation is taxed for their health care (according to John Roberts), you were lied to and were/are a willing dupe. In the process you let generations of republicans and democrats indept the next 3 generations of Americans. You deserve nothing if not a hanging with the rest of our/your generation. You will reap what you sowed. Sorry for you if you think anything different has happened.

I am not older and may be uglier but my name is not maggot so I got that going for me

I disagree. Any politician worth castrating is worth hanging. Saves time, money and sends a much stronger message. I hope the days of one set of rules for Congress and the politician class and one for the rest of is coming to an end.

My father would be 104 if alive today and told me that SS was a pyramid scam from 1965, and would never be able to pay for retirement, so better save and invest when U need it because due to LBJ's Great Society Programs the money is not there ..only an IOU from the FEDS...it was looted long ago and SS $ is all borrowed from unfriendly creditors.

Damn, ever since I've been earning a paycheck I make sure to funnel as much as I can to tax-advantage accounts to reduce the amount I give to the government. It kills two birds with one stone: savings so I don't have to rely on SS, starves the federal gov't by reducing my tax bill. Plus living in TX means no state income tax.

Exactly. Sure, you'll pay taxes when you withdraw that money but you'll be able to control your withdraw amounts and from what accounts and therefore control your taxes. It's never a good idea to pay the government now when you can pay later (as an aside, Roth accounts are not the huge win most people seem to think, gotta run the numbers as its just another tool for certain situations)

Castrate them, stuff the miniature penis and ball sack in their mouths, and then hang them?

While I agree it's absolutely foolish to depend on SS for retirement, it's fucking bullshit that people aren't possibly going to get what they paid for.

We should garnish wages of career politicians before we take away from the average Joe.

I'm first world. Public hanging is good enough for me. Maybe I'm a softy ?

She's the one who walked by and got the fucking shock of her life when she looked down at the screen as I scrolled. I'm a known quantity here, and a small handful have met me. Ask @sirhrmechanic , if you can without being too obnoxious.

Veer I apologize. Especially to the MRS. I am a pig. I have been drinking all day and I thought this picture would get me accolades from the peanut gallery here and cheer me up. I offer this as a reason not as an excuse. Again my apologies.

SS is not an investment plan. You don't pay into it so that you can collect it at some later date. You are taxed to pay for the current generation of recipients with the hope that there will be a system of payers to pay for you when you are eligible. Whoever said it is a pyramid scam is dead on. I'm not that young, but I'm a shit-ton younger than most of you. I've not lived one breath under the assumption that SS will be solvent when I'm eligible to collect.

Social security averages a "return" of 1.5%, not even keeping pace with inflation.
When originally implemented, the age to collect benefits was higher than the average life expectancy.
This happened just after the US government declared bankruptcy.
SS was a sneaky way of getting long term, low interest loans for a bankrupt government.

Okay, that pic can officially now not be un-seen!

Anyways, as far as SS goes, I'm only 28 years old and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if when I'm old enough to collect, SS no longer exists.

Veer is good people... and I bet Mrs. Veer didn't appreciate that picture!

And I need to go look at some midget porn or something to get that particular image out of my head...

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

my poke at Veer was tongue and cheek regarding his innate ability to come up with thread titles. It was nothing personal, and I'm not sure how it could have been taken as such.

    Is it a full moon?

Now that the SS "tax" is near 13% of your income it is taking out a huge chunk of what you could wind up saving yourself for retirement.
It was a lot different when it was around the 1% or 2% range.

At the very least it will make a great excuse to have fun freaking out and rioting for fun when we they say they won't pay up. Probably can have fun stirring up the FSA, winding them up and letting them go have fun.

If Forbes can be believed we are over 210 Trillion in unfunded liability. How do we come back from that without austerity ? We saw how well that worked for Greece, and they are a tiny economy.

I don't doubt you have skills. I really do appreciate some of the crazy shit you come up with. I honestly don't see how anyone has the time to read enough articles to come up with it all.

The above pic, I'm not going to quote, the guy is holding clamps.
I'm betting that it has been shopped in.
In that local I'd bet they would have a blade for such work.

Damn, man. Stop beating yourself up. I accept your apology, for one, and I don't think that the image being 'shopped or not is an issue in this context.

Only way is hyper inflate our way out, devalue the dollar and pay down the base. The Weimar did it, we can too.

We won't have to come back at all. The world will never have a margin call, an thats what it would take. It's all just numbers on a balance sheet. The US will just keep printing money an the can will just stay the same size.

This is not to disrespect anyone, just the truth. You shouldnt apologize. Both Veer and 1J put up just as nasty stuff, like pictures of someone with a diaper full of shit. Or pictures of a camel fucking someone. I find that at least as offensive as the photo above. Its a boys forum. We get a bit nasty sometimes.

***Edited to note that I was quite guilty of the same***

And if references be needed, @sirhrmechanic has spent the night in my home and Ive visited his and met his lady.

well, we had an interest rate of about 0%, a dollar that fell against almost every other currency and Quantitative Easing for what, 10 years? And it doesn't work because what, everyone else is even more fucked up than we are?

Now, we are gaining ground again. If interest rates rise and we don't have the economic growth and austerity to keep up then what? Riots in the street is my guess.

No need to hunt deep sites, mainstream sites like Tumblr have a lot of it these days.

Well, they take that money from me in one hand and I'll just take it back another way with the other. Been there, done that, it works and I'm sure it'll work again. I don't have a problem lying, stealing and cheating from those that are willing to do it to me.
