I built my first precision rifle with a plain-Jane McMillan A-5 stock simply because I thought it looked cool, and since A-5 is a higher model number than A-2, A-3, or A-4, it must be the best, right?

Fast forward three years of shooting experience, training, and additional rifles, and I've come to realize that the best stock for me is actually one with an adjustable cheek-piece, and a slanted bottom; a la the McMillan A-3 or the Manners T2A. That said, I figured I'd be stuck with my original A-5, as it is inletted for a Sako TRG-S, not exactly the most common inlet for resale.

Fortunately however, I stumbled upon Joe Ducos, a SH member who specializes in stock modifications. Joe took my original A-5, and transformed it into exactly what I wanted. He reworked the comb by adding an integral cheek-piece with KMW hardware. Joe also completely re-profiled the bottom of the buttstock with fiberglass and Marine Tex, thus eliminating the butt-hook. The result now is a rifle that finally fits me and my shooting style perfectly.

After a trip to On Target Customs for some new paint, this original rifle of mine is now better than ever, and has a permanent home in my arsenal.

    Thanks gentlemen!

    Re: McMillan A-5 make-over project

I've had the privilege of having Joe work on all my rifles and calling him friend for the last 8 years. He showed me this one about the same time he was doing the folder for Tony and I was again amazed with the workmanship.

Your rifle turned out great with the paint and all! Thanks for posting.
