I am looking at a McMillan A5 stock. I want to get an adjustable cheek piece, just not sure which one to go with. Integral, saddle, or thumbwheel. Pros/cons to each? Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated.

Re: McMillan Cheek Piece Options

I have the saddle mount on both my A5 stocks.

I did, however, find that the thumb screws came loose after 5 or 6 rounds with the .308 and 3 or 4 with the .338LM, so I got 8 10-32 x 1/2" set screws and added them to the stocks. The downside is that you need to carry an Allen wrench but that's no biggie.

Re: McMillan Cheek Piece Options

If you get the saddle cheek piece take a pair of needle nose pliers and get the saddle where you want finger tighten em and then give em about 1/2 turn with the pliers, never had a problem out of them and i shoot about 500-600 rnds through my A5, but get the KMW Cheek hardware, elevation, tilt forward/backwards, favor more to one side depeding on how you want it

How does the KMW mod work? Do I order the stock from McMillan & have a smith machine/install? I didn't see it as an option on McMillan's website.

Re: McMillan Cheek Piece Options

Among the McMillan options, I prefer the Integral over the Saddle version.

The Integral cheekrest's mounting piece which contains the two vertical posts is mounted to the cheekpiece block with screws. The screws are inserted through slotted holes which allow a small but significant degree of lateral cheekrest block positioning.

Such lateral adjustment is not available when specifying the Saddle cheek rest.

It's a small thing, but I think it's important.
