was curious about the finish on the mcmillan stocks. i have a mcmillan on my m1a supermatch with the molded in camo. it's finish feels almost like grippy rubber. my question is, are the a1-a5 stocks have the same finish, or is it more of the somewhat rough somewhat smooth like the b&c stock my 700 currently wears? Tanks!

Their molded in color stocks are made in 2 pieces. They start with 2 mirror image forms, pour resin into the molds in different colors, then, in the case of marble for example, swirl the colors together to make the contrasting color pattern, apply fiberglass cloth and more resin. Then put the molds together with an inflatable tube and compression to force the resins into the checkering, etc.. Then they remove the balloon and press in more fiberglass resin with a fiberglass material. The heavier stocks get filled with more resin than fiberglass. They wet sand the finished product.

While I typically try not to be much of a grammar-Nazi around here, I feel compelled to point out that your high school English teacher would not approve of this.

"Grippy rubber" feel? All of our M1A stocks with molded in camos are simply very hard smooth gelcoat on the ourside, no texture to them at all. And they are not available with the textured panels on the pistol grip and forearm.
Are you sure you don't have some kind of a custom painted finish on the rifle?

I was wondering the same thing. All of the Supermatches with McMillan stocks that I have seen have had a hard and smooth finish.

I appologize for my bad grammer, was just looking for some info after being at work for 36 hours, we can't all be so priveleged to work on submarines. i suppose the phrase "grippy rubber" was a bad choice. i assume this is the hard gel coat finish.

Yes sir, from my vantage point, that appears to be identical (if not a little shiny) to the gelcoat on both of my McMillan's, one of which is on an M1A.

Re: mcmillan stock finish

Before I get 26 e-mails and 14 phone calls about wanting it, that beautiful high gloss finish on Buzzsaw's 10/22 STC stock is not one of our molded-in marble finishes. That,s a somewhat pricy and very well done custom paint job with a couple of coats of clear-coat over it and a lot of rubbing with polishing compound. So, no, I cannot make you a molded marble stock that looks like that.
