Hello,

I am lookin at getting a bolt action 308 and i am looking at a two different options. Mcmillan has a tac 308 in stock and ready to ship. or i am going to order a HRT through GAP. Does anybody have any experience with mcmillan rifles? GAP is obviously a good choice but i would have to wait. The GAP is quite a bit less expensive as well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

McMillans are shooters forsure but over priced. It won't shoot any better then the GAP. Buy GAP and spend the money you save on ammo, glass, or training.

As an alternative, would you consider the STALKER GEN 2 Sniper Weapon System in .308?

Pusher- I figured that would be the answer and quite frankly its the answer i needed. Ive heard nothing but great things about GAP except for long wait times and ive heard nothing about mcmilan except about their stocks. I am kind of an impulse buyer and needed to be talked down from the mcmillan.

Drake- That thing looks cool but its not what im looking for. Thanks for the offer!

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Hey no problem at all, just wanted to bring it to your attention.

I think that you are on thr right track for a really nice system. Please let me know if there is anything or accessories that you may need. I would be more than pleased to help you out.

Both systems are very well made. You might want to make an analysis of what is included at the price point you are willing to spend. Then make your decision from there.

best of luck.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

i have a GAP HRT and LOVE it, mcmillan makes great guns too if the wait is worth the price difference then you won't be bad off with a mcmillan.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Yeah Ill proabaly go with GAP I can just put down my deposit and spend some time making enough money to buy a scope with the rifle and actualy be able to use it! i always forget about optics or irons and have a a useless gun in my safe for a while while i figure out a scope!

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

I just had to have a McMillan. They quoted me 4-6 months and I got it in 4. TAC 308, 24" threaded Schnieder barrel. It is fabulous.
The other side-- I shoot with GAP shooters all the time and if I didn't just 'have' to have a MAC, I'd give GAP a chance.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

While I agree that GAP is every bit as good as if not better than McMillan, personally I'd get the McMillan. There are two reasons for me. First, McMillan has more history. Including a Military presence... And not just with Stocks. Back when I was in the Corps the go-to 50cal SASR was a McMillan. Second... Other than here on the Hide and in the "Tactical" long range shooting world, no one knows who GA Precision is. They're just another custom gun maker to the rest of the firearms world. And as such, once you buy one, you'll have a hard time recouping your investment if you happen to have to sell it. I know... The idea is to never want to get rid of it. But you never know what the future holds and unfortunately, the only place I've seen GAP rifles bring a high percentage of what you pay for them is right here on the Hide. Just my 0.02$ FWIW...

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

go gap you wont be sorry the wait is worth it. their is nothing wrong McMillan good history and its a good gun resales are abought the same. It all boils down to what you want as you r the 1 who has to live with your investment. If u have the money get the one u want than buy the other one next

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

I feel good that I can actually post a legit opinion here. I was lucky enough to work a deal on a lightly used GAP HRT on the hide here. I would not in any way consider myself a GAP fan boy but without a doubt I believe in their quality, craftsmanship, and customer support.

This is my third gap including an m40a5 and will someday have my m40a1 sent in and then order the GAP-10 hopefully soon. Anyway...that HRT is THE MOST ACCURATE AND RELIABLE RIFLE THAT I HAVE EVER SHOT!!!! It is incredible. I only know MAC for all the different stocks I have owned but nothing of the full builds. They also i'm sure are solid. I say HRT.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

If you must have new, last time I was at SGCUSA they had one McMillan TAC308 left they are trying to clear out at $3999 -- just checked their website and still lists 1 in stock.

GAP Rifles are for "Operators"

Mac Rifles are for Operators.

If I could afford it, I myself would get the rifle that the Operators uses, and not the one that the "Operators" uses. So get the Mac!

Mac Rifles are bought by the government for the Operators.

I'm sure if a choice was allowed, then the people who get issued the stuff, would pick something different.

I can't speak for Operators or "Operators", I can only speak for one Hobbyist. This one Hobbyist chooses Mac.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Im definitely not an operator or "operator" i have played the game Operation once or twice. Im probably going make my decision once my post in the GAP status forum is answered. If I'm waiting a year for the GAP ill probably get the MAC if its less than a 6 months I'm going GAP its cold here anyway and I'm a fair weather shooter. Im waiting 6 months for my suppressor so I'm already waiting for something else anyway might as well add another rifle to cue. THe McMillan does have some history especially because there tac 50 as the longest confirmed kill in combat ever was with one of those. Thanks for all of the opinions they have definitely helped me in making my decision.

I'm afraid your facts are off a bit, Not that it matters but, the AI L115A3 .338 LM holds the world record. Check this link.

I thought Gunny Hathcock held the record before that. Thing is... He made his 2500 yard shot with a fucking Ma-Deuce!!! I challenge ANYONE to do that!

The above link lists his shot at 2,090 meters.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

I have a GAP and shot a multi-day precision rifle course with a friend who used a McMillian. The accuracy and quality was similar.

With GAP, you get more personal service, and it is more customizable. You get a lower price than McMillian, but you also have a longer wait.

With McMillian, you pay for the name over the cost of the product. Brand recognition with long-term dependability is worth something extra.

Is a McMillian worth the extra cost over a GAP?...not to me, but others would disagree.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Well it's official I ordered the McMillan. I called them today and got some of the best service I coul ask for Jerry answered all of the questions I had and even did some extra research for me that most company's I've delt with would have tol me to do on my own. Part of the reason I went with the McMillan was the package option, it came with my choice of scope (i went night force 3-15) a pelican case, drag bag, 4 mags, bipod, rings, sling and cleaning kit. I figure I can shoot this rifle for a while and I can order a gap at a later date while still having something to shoot. Another cool thing is the "free" training class that they advertise. For me this is big because I am a new shooter and can use all of the help I can get. Now as of today I'm not signed up because the lady in charge is at shot show but when she gets back she's supposed to let me know if that is still going on. I will keep you all up to speed on my dealings with McMillan!

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Congratz on the purchase decision. Fun course that will familiarize you with your rifle, scope & basic spotting skills. Just went thru it in Oct ... PM me if you have any specific questions re: the course & what to expect.

Re: Mcmillan Tac 308 or GAP HRT

Grand total about 8k.
5200 for the rifle
1700 optic
1100 in the other accessories listed in prior post.

It cost more than other rifles of similar quality but i only have to wait a month or so for this one! They claim it was a savings of about 100 dollars when you buy everything separate.
If in fact i do get the free training class that will close the price margin quite a bit so we will see! i think i got a good value for my money so far.

and thanks ill let you know if i have any questions about the class!
