Is this abnormal? I'm not too familiar with what is considered normal in Haitian society.

This is a little past normal. Usually there are a few murders a day but not 90 in a day. Two major gangs are ramping up to fight each other in the shanty slum Citi Soleil. Shaba Shaw gang is funded by the Govt. Cabriet is a tough large slum gang who wants Shaba Shaws place at the feeding trough. Everything is ready to explode and spilling out farther into surrounding areas as well as Port Au Prince

Ever since blue helmets pulled out Haitian police can not match the gangs in size or fire power.

The populations also wants the current President to leave Haiti.

The fighting raises food costs because population can not get out of slum to refresh stock. Prices rise and people start starving. Desperate people have nothing to loose so they fight.

He’s partially right. DR has a few hundred thousand fewer people (still over 10mil) but almost twice the land area. The history of Haiti is pretty tragic — it has been manipulated and plundered since the natives were wiped out. Such a shame, too, Hispanola is such a naturally beautiful island.
Whatever the reason, it is an undeniable shithole now. Not a place I care to return to.
