I don’t know that I disagree with the bill as summarized in the article, but your question is valid.

It’s not likely that there will ever be real recourse to hold lawmakers accountable though. That would be counter to the business as usual mode that keeps them in office and their pockets lined with gold.

Okay...Let's make all such rulings double-edged swords. Fair and even to all. Hold members of government, including law enforcement, accountable just as normal civilians would be accountable in the same circumstances.

If a cop is shooting at a perp and he misses and hits an innocent bystander, he should face the same consequences as a civilian armed citizen who makes the same mistake..........If civilians are to be punished for "lying" to lawmakers, when these rascals do the same to the tax-paying public or fails to deliver on a promise they made to get them elected, they should face the same deal. Simple.

One of the main reasons why this society has gone to the birds is because too many times, accountability only applies to one side.

If you are brought before the committee to testify and you are under oath, then laws already apply concerning lying.
If you are not under oath (like Zuckerberg), then they have no leg to stand on.

Here in Pa. years ago the local School Board held a public hearing as required by Pa.'s Sunshine Law . It was to discuss renovations to the High School gym at millions of dollars . We're talking 1986 or so . Well thousands showed up against the proposed Pork Barrel Buffet . No one from the public was allowed to speak . Everyone was informed that ; A This is happening . B One more peep and peopple start getting arrested . Strong arm politics are nothing new . It's that almost all the politics are strong arm and anti Constitutional today that is the nut .

This was enacted to reduce the number of “frivolous lawsuits”. Well, it did exactly what was intended by allowing the city to do all sorts of things that the people don’t want completely unchallenged. If you don’t like it, you better have deep pockets.

Along the same topic, yet totally disimilar is municipalities that pass themselves a "90 Day Statute Of Limitations" which means that even if you were wronged by said municipality, if you don't begin proceedings within 90 days, you lose.

And yes, I learned that one the hard way. $63,000.00 and a house hard. The gov't shouldn't be in business to be in business.

But I'm not bitter.....

Nor should you have to be. Those who run municipalities have totally lost the idea that they are there at the behest of the people.

I was fortunate enough to have been a friend of a gentleman 40+ years my senior who had a tough life but retained his compassion for real people and animals, though hidden under a thick tough skin of defense. He had been the proud owner of a beautiful farm in western PA, that was taken from him by the auspices of eminent domain. Pennsylvania had decided to build an intrastate that just happened to “need” his beautiful average to complete. The greedy bastages that create development plans and pass the profits around for each other to enjoy, tried all sorts of underhanded tactics to unseat him and force him into accepting lowball offers for his land. Tactics that included attempted murder on his property. Fortunately, he was a strong-willed and self sufficient man who grew up the hard way. He withstood their attack’s and sued them successfully after a five year battle, so that they would pay him the real value of the land.

Understand that he had no desire to sell his little piece of paradise, but facing reality, he moved to Florida. The experience left him bitter, paranoid (you’re not really paranoid if they really ARE out to get you), and suspicious of any governmental bodies.

I somehow was fortunate to become friends with him and learned a lot. When he passed, he left me his favorite nickel Colt Combat Commander. I have shot the snot out of that pistol and still do. It probably needs a re-barrel.

Now what was my point? Oh yeah, local governments are as bad, if not worse than big G.
