I didn't know that anyone was doing that for firearms, but something I have thought about for years since using it on prototype down hole oil tools at a previous job.
Are you considering doing it just for color, or for surface hardness?
I have had my Armalite nitrideded but it was IonBond's chrome nitride. I had roughly 2,200 rounds on it and I sheared a bolt lug. IDK if it was because of the nitride but I think it was. If you do it I would leave the bolt alone and just do the carrier. Now I did a couple of 5.56 bolts too and they have been run hard and I have not had any problems. All three BCGs were sent in at the same time....
