I have been noticing lately that precision rifles, bolt guns, are showing up with micro sights attached to their scopes. What in the world is this? Pretty cool, tacticool to say the least. But do they really have a legitimate function atop a precision rifle in a civilian application? Does the micro dots offer the hunter an advantage for those times when the power of his scope is to much?

The use of the micro dot sights allow you to get on target when your scope, with to much power, can not. So this is their claim. Does it merit weight or is it just tacticool equipment?

Are military precision rifles being equipped with these "Micro Dots"?

So I figured the best see what the hype was all about and how functional they really are in a hunting application was to try it. I called a buddy that has a spare Trijicon RMR. I ordered the rail from Badger Ordinance and he is going to be kind enough to let me have it for the upcoming deer season and some coyote hunting.

What are your opinions on this new application. Heck, maybe it is not new, I am just now finding out about it. But anyway, chime in and voice your opinions on "Micro Dots" and their application/use in the precision world of bolt action rifles.

Re: Micro Sights For Precision???

I don't see a point in it even in a military application. My knowledge on military strategy is limited at best, but if one truly needed to use their precision rifle in a CQB scenario. Shouldn't one just use a gun outfitted for that situation? It's kinda like taking a drag car on a road course or taking a crap in a urinal.

Re: Micro Sights For Precision???

I don't run a micro dot/red dot/holosight/etc., on any of my bolt guns, but I'll admit to having them on a couple different precision AR variant rifles, including hunting rifles and 3-gun rigs, for those quick, pop-up (especially moving) targets at closer ranges where getting on target with a magnified optic isn't always possible or desirable. I guess others may have a different opinion or thought about the necessity/viability of something like an RMR or FastFire or...whatever...on their bolt action, but I suppose the concept is fundamentally the same.
