micrometer seating die what do you like ?

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I own several of the Forster and 1 Redding seaters and like the fact I can see the numbers on the Redding better but don't see a difference in the way they seat a bullet as far as accuracy in seating...The Forster is cheaper and I like the larger knob...I have also picked up some of the Forster at a bargain and just got new sleeves and stems from Forster at a nominal price to convert to a new caliber...

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I like the RCBS better than the rest for only 1 reason.

It has a window in the side of the die and I can drop the bullet in partway through the seating stroke. Beyond that, any of the micrometer seaters from Redding, RCBS, Forster, etc. will do an excellent job.

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I also have 3 of the RCBS and liked the window, because of run out and not so accurate seating they were are replaced with Forster seaters...Just my experience may not all be like that for everyone but the 308 and 30-06 started shooting a lot better when I replaced them...

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

Personally I prefer the Redding.

edited to reflect that I misread the question earlier. I had one thing on my mind and it went directly to the keyboard.

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

i seen a cool video on youtube and though the redding was amazing but the forster is priced vary well, the extra 20 or 30 saved could go to some more powder

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I have Redding and Forster micrometer seating dies. They both work exactly the same: Precision sliding sleeve guides the bullet straight into the neck. I prefer Forster seating dies because they are less expensive.

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I've got a Forster 338LM micro seater, a Redding Comp 7 RM seater and two Hornady micro seating stems that I use on 223, 22-250 and 308 and these work well with their 'inline' seaters.

If you waved your magic wand, I'd ask for the Reddings just because I'm moving in that direction, but the Forster is pretty slick, as well.

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

Guys with the Forster dies help a brother out...

I have heard that the Redding dies dont like compressed loads.

I compress my .308 loads with around 46.6gr Varget.

Wondering if the Forster dies have the same "issue" as the Redding die in regards to compressed loads?

Do you use compressed loads with comp seaters? Any problems you have noticed?

cheers

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

IMHO, the only high grade seaters are the Forster BR and Redding Comp, all others are tied for second place so far as accuracy.
(Well, the Wison, etc, seaters are also great but it's hard to get them into the press so they don't get used by many of us.)

Micrometer heads are only an aid to easily changing OAL, they add nothing to accuracy.

I've gone as far as 47.6gr in a lapua case seating a 155 scenar to 2.2OAL (measured with a comparator). I had to turn the micrometer head .018 past seating the scenar in an empty case in order to get the same COAL (pretty freaking compressed). My redding die has the VLD stem in it and I'd say the "ring" on the bullet from the seating die is very minimal. It's very apparent, but I'm not sure there's any noticeable/measureable deformation occuring. Now... try that same thing with my wilson micrometer die and the ring that forms is blatantly obvious and you can feel it very easily. I haven't tried it with a forster die, but I have one sitting around I could probably try it on. PM me if you need me to do it and respond here with results and I'll see what I can do.

I use Wilson inline seaters with Sinclair micrometer tops in 308 and 260, they have replaced Reddings comp seaters. Both the Redding and Forster work exactly the same, the Forster cost less, but the numbers are hard to read compared to Reddings

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I have both Redding and Forster. Like all others have mentioned, the Redding is easier to read. Both are good seaters, and I don't think you'll be disappointed in either. I've heard/read that Forster was the first micro seater and the Redding is a similar version/copy. Not trying to start rumors, just a bit of info. One final note, the Forster is huge and could be used as a weapon.

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I too like the Wilson seater, I like the feel, I can tell if one is hard to seat. That round becomes a fouler...

Re: micrometer seating die what do you like ?

I use the Redding. It's all I know, so I have nothing to compare against. It seems to have accurate adjustment, and seats to consistent depth. I'm happy with its performance.
