Does someone make a mil-dot master that actually works. I have a mil dot master but it has done me zero good in 3 matches so far. For example---

I needed to range a target at an unknown distance.

The target was a 12x12 plate. My mil reading was .5. The mil dot master could not help me. The target ended up being right at or about 660.

It seems like the mildot master is more usable for way bigger targets. like man sized targets. Thanks for the help.

no he did not. Because if he did, he would not have posted this statement.

Guy,

Use the (*&^%) no, read the book and learn it your self.

jcvibby,

I just took the data you gave in your post, and used my mil-dot master and got a reading of 660 yds.

As everybody has said read the instructions. Hint look at the far right column, and the bullet drop window.....

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

The MILDOT Master that I own only allows you to range down to 1.0 MIL's. I also carry a calculator in my data book case. I use a simple equation to figure out what I can't get from the MILDOT Master:

Target Size in yards, times 1000, divided by the MIL reading, is your range in yards.

When I do the math it looks like this:

.333yards (12 inches) X 1000 = 333 / .5 = 666yds

wow...............

i'm truly gobsmacked.....................

if you would feed the mildotmaster fresh batteries, you could not only mil down way past 1moa, but you could figure lunar drift also,

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

If you are talking about the Analog Mil-dot master than pay attention to the left side of the card. If you line up 24" to 1 mil you will get the proper reading. Because you cannot seem to be able to line up 12" to .5mil... It is the way the card was designed.

Just read the instruction book again..... I had just been using the "Bullet Drop" side to convert to MOA. It's nice to learn something new.....

I hope my equation is accurate enough for this crowd..... LoL

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

use the window on the right of the mildot master. line up .5mil on a 12inch target. then look back at the left window you will see 660 yards.

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

I know the other way is to use the bullet drop on the rights side. But I sometimes prefer to use the left and just divide.
So lining up the 12" to the .5 mil on the right side gives the range on the left side.

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

Your MM will work.

But if you ever get caught somehow not getting the right information from it, just memorize this:

(27.77 x target height in inches) / mil reading = distance in yards

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

Guys,

The mildot master was designed by someone who really, really knew his sh%t (kinda like a rocket scientist). If you find it lacking...you are either doing something very exotic or you are using it wrong. The MDM was patented in 1998 and is still in widespread use by US Mil, law enforcement and the civilian tactical shooting community....that alone is impressive.

The guy who invented the product (Bruce Robinson) gave away his product to young shooters at matches and via prize tables (I got one direct from him when I was a new competitive shooter right after 9/11). He also sent hundreds oversees to our military early in the Iraq conflict (for free). He also created a program called 'goodies for grunts' that sent hundreds and hundreds of care packages overseas...much of the stuff was on his dime.

If there is someone that deserved the support of the shooting community more, I do not know of them.

Bruce died in 2004 and the MDM is now owned by his widow. I'm sure if you googled the term, went to the site and used the 'contact' info to get in tougch with them....you'd probably find a way to get hold of an instruction manual.

Re: Mil-Dot Master that actually works???

Jake, I have the instruction book. If you still wanted to look at it or make copies, just let me know and I'll bring it over when I pick up the AR500 plates.
