lets say you wanted to create a personal collection of antique military firearms, what would you put on the list. I do not wanna go too extravagant in rarity, or number

list your 5-10 neccessary firearms to create such a collection.

Thanks

Re: Military Firearms collection

Are you limiting it to antiques (pre-1899), only? Or, would you include relic status, as well (50 years old, or more)?

Re: Military Firearms collection

a luger
a broomhandle
a p38
a 1870's colt SAA
an M1
an M1 carb
a war era 1911
a 1903
a 1860 army
a sharps 1874
a pepperbox
a pinfire
and a hipoint

Re: Military Firearms collection

i would say it did not really matter, you could go back that far. probably just the 5-10 most important for a collection

Re: Military Firearms collection

Can't do it in 10! Pick a time or war or Country an start there.

I started with a 1913 Lithgow then the sickness took over

Re: Military Firearms collection

M1 Garand, M1903 or M1903a3/a4, 98K mauser, 1911/1911a1, P-38, Nagant, SKS, AK47, Luger, Enfield.

All are reasonable except the 03a4. Some Lugars are pricey but many are still reasonable.

M1917
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine

Re: Military Firearms collection

I'm sort of doing the same thing.

Thus far I've acquired,

Savage Enfield No.4 Mk.1* Stamped US PROPERTY
1942 and 1944 Mosin Nagants

Next on the list are:

Mauser K98k
K31
Arisaka Type 99
M-1 Garand
Martini-Henry

Maybe you see a pattern here...

Anyways, I'm thinking hard about taking my 1942 Mosin Nagant 91/30 and wizarding it into a PU Sniper configuration. I just need someone to talk me into it.

Re: Military Firearms collection

Most American milsurp is getting pricy. You're starting a bit late. You can find some shooter grade's in the $450+ price range. True collector grades are $1000+. That is for originals, not someones parts gun they made correct. You really need to know what you are buying. Lots of guns with fake parts, fake stapes ect.

My collection is senterd around 22 lr trainers and the parent rifle or handgun. I have verious Mauser, US, Polish and British trainers. The rarest ones are The Belgin 1952 ABL 22lr Mauser and it's 30-06 Belgin Mauser. I have over 30 trainers and the parent rifle for most of them. For some, like the German Mausers, I only need one K98k.

Re: Military Firearms collection

Tried to write a list...just too many to choose from if you have a free shot across any era, nation and choice of rifle, side arm, SMG, LMG, HMG etc.

So, for a Brit collecting rifles:

Land Pattern Musket ("Brown Bess")
Martini Henry .577/450
Lee Enfield SMLE
Lee Enfield No4T
L1A1 SLR
L96 / L96A1

Re: Military Firearms collection

CMP is done with 1903's and M1 carbs, so ya kinda need to get going on those as they shall continue to climb in price, id jump on an M1 from them now while they still got em. everything else just keep your eyes peeled, be suprised and some treasures at local small shops and alot of times they dont know what they got

FYI its D-day today so go buy one today

Re: Military Firearms collection

it sorta helps like mentioned to find a niche or genre ya really like and stick to that for a while, for me its ww2 era military but all countries

Re: Military Firearms collection

I love ww2 history. there are just so many weapons in the era that it would be hard to get all of them

+1...for me it is military "precison rifles" of 20th Century alongside British military weapons...but even that is a BIG group!

Fun trying though....

Re: Military Firearms collection

I think you may find military surplus firearms collecting to be quite costly if you jump in both feet without doing a lot of research. I believe you can save your self a lot of headach by at first picking one type and researching it thoroughly before making a purchase. I personally have found the research to be almost as rewarding and fun as the firearms themselves.
After that you can move to other types if you like. Doing the same for each one.
In the short time I've been involved I can see where there can be many pitfalls in acting without proper information.

Re: Military Firearms collection

I have a Canadian sniper rifle made in 1945 chambered in 303 British. Unfortunately, the guy who owned it before "Sporterized" it, AKA "ruined it". Sill, the rifle is extremely accurate.

Re: Military Firearms collection

None are really collector grade, all are shot...so more of an "acquirer" than a collector...but FWIW

US Collection:
Trapdoor Springfield
Krag Jorgensen
M1903 Mark 1
M1903A4
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M1A
AR15/M16A2
M40A1
M1911 Colt
Beretta 92FS/M9

Foreign:
Mauser 98K
Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk 1
AK-47
Browning Hi Power

As the kids have started growing up along with the expenses associated with them, my acquisitions have slowed. Maybe when they leave the nest I'll start looking for:

Springfield Model 1812 Musket
Springfield Model 1861
M1895 Winchester Lee
M1903A1 USMC Sniper
1941 Johnson
91/30 Mosin
FN FAL
Arisaka

Re: Military Firearms collection

I normally pick a 'era' or war, also by country. You can collect by type. You well be surprised how fast the collection builds. According to my latest inventory I have 167 fire arms and 47 percussion cap (non)fire arms. Just one at a time and over a period of years it does add up.

Areas of interest

Colt auto's
Colt percussion cap revolvers
Odd percussion cap hand guns
S&W revolvers
Lugers
C96's
Lee Enfields
US military
German military
Swiss military
Yugo bolt guns (great shooters)

Don't forget modern era guns, Rugers, AR15's, and AR10's.

Re: Military Firearms collection

I've been gravitating towards the usual WWI & WWII rifles. However, at the gun show last week, a Model 1890 German Commission Rifle caught my interest and came home with me. It's early 8mm, and requires bullets that are a bit smaller, so I'll end up loading my own. There are so many facets to this wonderful and expensive hobby.

Re: Military Firearms collection

My list is similar to the previous ones but my "must haves" (that won't require a second mortage) would be:

US
1. .30-40 Krag
2. 1903
3. 1917
4. 1903A3
5. M1 Carbine
6. M1 Garand
7. 1911A1
8. M1917 revolver

Foreign
1. K98
2. M91/30 Mosin Nagant
3. M39 Finnish Nagant
4. M96 Swedish Mauser
5. Swiss K31
6. No 1, Mk 3 Enfield
7. No 4, Mk 1 Enfield
8. Type 99 Arisaka

Have you thought about getting a Curio & Relic license? I've amassed a decent collection of old military rifles over the years and the C&R license helps. The ability to buy rifles online, at dealer price, and have them shipped to your house opens up a lot of opportunities for purchase and saves you money.
