Is there a difference from the commercial 175 grain 308 sierra match kings and the 175 grain pull downs you see selling as surplus?

One guy told me they have a fake hollow point but shoot the same way.

Thanks I could not locate anything on the search feature.

A few things you have to be careful of...

Are they really 'hollow points' and not a FMJ/BT?

If they are 'hollow points' are they Sierra brand and not Pivi, or of some unknown origin?

I don't know what a 'fake hollow point' is? Either it has a 'hollow' point at the tip, or it doesn't, no?

A lot of this stuff is the pull down of M-118, which uses the 173gr FMJ/BT.

If I could, I'd try and weigh 20 of them and get an idea. Pivis will be all over the map and the SMKs, no so much so.

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

I have used pulled down M118 and M118LR bullets with very good success. They may have some pull marks, but they work almost as well as factory new. To the best of my knowledge, the military bullets are Sierra's. I have never used Privi, so I cannot say how they would compare. The comment about the fake hollow point is relating to the way they are manufactured. They do have a hollow point, but it does not work like a hunting round. The hollow portion is just empty space in the jacket. It does not server to offer any kind of bullet expansion, that is why it is still legal under the Geneva convention.

Those look like the Sierra Match King 175gr HPBT.

We can call them OTM (open tip match) or we can call them hollow points, they're the same thing, just a wording issue.

Obviously HPBT bullets are still hollow points, for rifle bullets and do differ in that the size of the cavity isn't as dramatic as one would find with pistol bullets that are labeled 'hollow points.'

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

I bought some 175gr pull downs from a member here that was selling them in the exchange a few years back. They shoot 3/4 moa in my sps tac.

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

other than weight what difference does it make if theyre privi? maybe weight consistency or base to ogive dimension or meplat quality, ballistic coeficient? this aint rocket science....oh wait, it kinda is aint it.

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

I just got some pulled m118lr projectiles which are 175 grain SMks. They have slight pull marks and light scratches. Will load up a few and shoot them over the weekend.

They're coated with something sticky (grease?) anyone got ideas to get it off? Thanks

The accuracy seems to be pretty good but the one flier with 43.5 might not have been there with new bullet or it could have just been me. Even with the flier it was still .952 MOA. I didnt have the crono with me that day but I'm goiung to try to get some speeds today.

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

I just tested some pulled M118LR 175SMKs and compared to new ones, they do suffer a bit from the "pull" and marks. Do not expect the same accuracy as you arent going to get it. And I also noticed that I would get some that just sort of took off out of the group.

I shot some Nosler 175 2nds as well and they were just hammers out of my GAP Crusader.

If you can get 2nds vs pulled for about the same price, its a no brainer, get 2nds, be it SMKs or Noslers, etc. To me, the pull and marks are affecting accuracy. It doesnt turn them to scrap, but it IS going to be detrimental.

Good results and reports.

I have about 1500 pulled M118 175's and didn't want to waste my time. ;-)

Looks like it's time to break open that 8# jug of Varget. LOL

Re: Military Pull down 175 grain Match bullets

I've shot roughly 1000 rounds of new SMK's and 300 pulled SMK's. For what its worth my best groups with new SMK's are around 1/3 MOA compared to 3/4 MOA with the pulled SMK's.

I think the collett pulled projectiles do in fact affect accuracy. They leave a circular gouge halfway around the cone of the bullet. The air pulled ones leave only shimmying marks/scratches at the base of the bullet and I can't tell if they affect accuracy.

Polygunbag for a while offered air pulled SMK's but now it seems all the M118LR rounds are being decomissioned via collett. Sucks.

If you want to spaz yourself out, use these for dot drills!

I'd be happy with those groups!
