I have a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 with the NP1-RR reticle and sent an email to NF asking about a reticle change. I specifically asked about the MIL reticle causing hassle with the MOA knobs and queried as to whether I would be better off selling the scope and replacing it completely with a Mil-Mil sysytem.

I got a reply with the pricing for replacement (which wasn't too bad), but the Rep said: "...by going to a MIL-MOA system it will be a learning curve. This configuration is what the military uses. "

I'm not a military shooter, but is this really the case?

Regardless, I think I may sell the current unit and replace it with what my tastes have switched to.

Re: ??? Military uses Mil-MOA?

They much of the military uses a mil based reticle with MOA knobs, simply because that is how they have done it since the late 70's early 80s and it has continued in that direction until recently.

Now, the USMC for example, in replacing their Unertl scopes has gone to Mil / Mil S&B scopes...

The Army continues to use Mil / MOA on a wide scale, mainly because change is slow... however the fact they use Mil / MOA doesn't mean they know something others don't, it simply means that is what they use because that is how they started.

I would remind people it is not 1978 or 1982 and we have greater choices and even deeper understandings in the field of precision tactical shooting.

But you are free to do whatever you like... and if copying the Army is what makes you happy, by all means go for your greater happiness

I think you are saying you are currently MOA/MOA and you want to switch to a Mil reticle? Then yes, if it were me I'd go completely Mil not half way.

I used to only have Mil reticle and MOA knobs..... let me say, it is SO nice not to have to convert anything and just dialing what I see in the reticle.

Onemoretime... that is exactly what I am saying.

Lowlight... thanks for the reply. It isn't a matter of copying anyone. Mil-spec don't make it right!

I just didn't realize that the military used a mixed system. Compatible systems just make sense to me, especially as I am primarily a shotgun shooter and just don't have the time to learn and practice the conversion from Mil to MOA to an acceptable level. The easier I can make it, the better.

Actually, I'm fine with MOA-MOA scopes, I just hate all the extra junk in this reticle as I have started to shoot more.
