I recently picked up a Springfield Range officer and love it. However, I want to change out the sights and I am leaning towards the Les Baer adjustable night site. My question is will milling of the slide be required? I have read elsewhere that the Range officer comes with a strange variant of the dovetail (LPA?). If milling is required, is it possible to change the dimension of current cut or will there be too much material removed? If this is the case, what are my options?

I haven't milled a 1911 in a few years, but I think the lpa and bomar cuts are similar and you may be able to swap them out. You need to measure the slide and look at the sight installation diagram.

I would go to a 1911 forum with a smithing section. Those dudes would know.

So after lots of research I called Springfield to ask there advice. Turns out I can send the slide to them and for less than what it would cost me for the Les Baer sights they will install their own version. Think I am just going to go that route. Sucks to send off the slide of my new favorite firearm. It will be 4 weeks before it comes back. Welcome to the world of custom firearms?
