Went out early this morning, got out there later than usual, it was pretty much right at 0630 when I sat down. The spot I sat down at I couldn't believe that nobody was in there, so I sat against a tree where the wind would keep my scent out of the area I expected the deer to approach from. About 10 minutes after I sat down one come trotting down the hill towards me, it was 0640'ish (didn't exactly check the phone at that moment) so it was still a bit dark, but light enough to see the deer. I was watching him through my scope, however I was sure it was a doe, didn't really matter, a deer is a deer when it's the first one i'd seen all weekend. Pushed the safety off, settled the crosshairs on the chest about 40 yards away, and touched off the 208amax, and got to enjoy the joy of seeing the fireball from the end of the barrel in the low light. The deer didn't react as I thought it would to the shot, instead of dropping dead from being hit with 3,000lbs/ft of energy with a bullet I thought would fragment that close in, it ran, and I heard it in the thick poo to the right of me, but I was sure it was down since it was close, and wasn't going away. I stood up and saw the second one, that one was a buck for sure, I could see the antlers well, he was trotting up the hill after I stood up. Since I thought (details in a second) the first was a doe, I loaded up another round and watched the buck go up the hill through the crosshairs and settled them on the back of the head. By then the buck fever was getting me somethin' fierce and I missed the shot. My excuse for that shot was the buck fever, 125 yards off-hand, and a small target. You know what they say, aim small, miss small.

Now, the details. It was a good thing I missed the buck going up the hill. It turned out the doe was a buck. Now I was sure he didn't have antlers, but I was wrong. He ran about 40 yards into the thicket crap with thorn bushes and other stuff that sucks.

I'm a meat hunter, so I really don't care about racks very much, but I hunt public land for the most part due to a lack of access to private land. Most folks that have good private land around here will lease out to hunters, but I don't have that kind of money, public land deer don't get to live very long so the antlers don't get very big very often. So yeah, it's not an impressive rack, but it's my 5th deer i've shot in my life, so it's taken 15years to get that many deer. Hopefully I can get another doe before season end. Might have to shoot one in the back yard.

Now for pictures. BTW, don't mind the mohawk, it was a joke for work. The stupid look I have no excuse for, I blame the wife for not taking more pics of me to get one where I didn't look like a retard.

I weighed him and he was 120lbs dressed, he felt a lot heavier while i drug him 3/4mile to the car....in the rain....through the mud.....up and down hills. I like to hunt deer, but I hate the part after you shoot 'em.

People respond to it in very different ways. If I wear a hat and talk to them for a while, and then take the hat off they may, or may not notice it. If I don't wear the hat from the start, most folks won't talk to me, and avoid me unless I deliberately approach them.

For all intents and purposes, i'm a normal average person. 30 years old, wife, 2 kids, house, college educated, I don't drink, smoke, use recreational drugs, have tattoos or piercings. The mohawk doesn't fit the <span style="text-decoration: underline">stereotypical</span> mohawk wearer. My daughters love the 'hawk, the wife hates it. Another week and the rest of the hair will be long enough for me to get another haircut and fade out the 'hawk. I will kinda miss it, it's started to grow on me (no pun intended) a bit.

The wife isn't too pleased about my oldest daughter (turns 5 in January) wanting to go hunting with me, so i'm going to take her this week sometime to see if I can get me a doe.

Anyone have any tips on how to make the wife more open to me passing the hunting and shooting tradition to my daughters? We don't have any sons so I don't have a choice but to involve my girls.

First deer I ever shot was a button buck that was smaller than this one. My last 3 deer were likely all about this same size. My second deer was a 13pt buck (still have the horns) that must have weighed over 200lbs dressed, he was a monster and a pain in the rear to get into the truck.

Too bad you don't hunt Shawn, we could get in some long range kills at our shooting range area acting as a shooter spotter team! lol. I have 1 doe tag left, but I can go and buy more if I need them.

lol. I told my wife the day before I was using her truck as I was taking the car seats and everything out of it. She gave me "the look" and told me that she doesn't want the blood and guts all over the back making it stink. I told her that I was taking the tarp with me and she said "ok", and walked inside.

My wife isn't into the whole hunting and shooting thing. She doesn't even want me to get my daughters involved. I only have daughters, no sons, so I have no choice. I'm taking my oldest (turns 5 in Jan) out this week sometime with me. I know my wife isn't happy about it, but she understands she doesn't have a winning argument regarding the subject matter.

Re: Missouri Rifle season kill this AM.

No offense but I thought MO started an 8 point rule,I bought some ground this spring with a cabin in Iron county and there were a lot of laws changed this year including out of state landowner tags-maybe it depends on the county?

Re: Missouri Rifle season kill this AM.

The Antler Point Restriction is a 4 pt. rule and it applies to one side of the bucks rack. To be considered a legal buck it must have at least 4 points measuring more than 1 inch. http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/Documents/13924.pdf
Not all counties in MO are included. The link shows a map of what counties are and gives a clear definition of what is considered leagal and what isn't.

Re: Missouri Rifle season kill this AM.

I was hunting in Clay county. There aren't antler point restrictions in the counties mostly around the bigger cities like KC and St. Louis. I believe Springfield is in there too, I don't remember and not going to take the time right now to check.

There aren't too many places to hunt around here that are inside the counties that don't have antler point restrictions. I'm glad that where I was hunting it's not he case, I didn't even know about the restrictions this year when I went out!

There are several things to remember when you're out hunting nowadays, and it kinda stinks because you have to think about all these things before you pull the trigger now, and you don't always have time to evaluate the whole situation before you make the shot. My problem is that i'm so desperate to put meat in the freezer that it's possible it could cloud my judgement.

Convince her the girls will be more self sufficient and not need a boy around if they can shoot, gut, drag, and skin their own deer. As a teenager, I forgot about the females when the whitetail rut was on. It was the off season that got me in trouble

. Hunting is a great way to stay out of trouble and out of the influence of other teens too. It'll teach them a lot about self value as well.
