Rifle Scopes mk4 vs. ior

Re: mk4 vs. ior

IOR mp8 illuminated reticle
4.5x14,50

vs

Mk4 6.5x20x50 illuminated tmr

this will be an all round mid range set up. Like the higher magnification for looking at holes and horns.

Both are around the same price

Re: mk4 vs. ior

I have never owned an IOR but have shot with 2 models. One of which was on a Barrett 50 cal. IIRC, there was something wrong with the IOR, but I dont think it was related to the recoil. Some problem that existed prior to mounting on the 50. I was not particularly impressed with it.

The other one I shot had the dot reticule. MP8, IIRC. I didnt care for the scope in general, but I did really like the reticule.

ETA- I would much prefer the MKIV series.

Good Gawd, Son! Tell everyone what your reservation is about ordering a Mark 4! lol

I know this guy and he is gtg, just in the learning phase of mid to long range.

Re: mk4 vs. ior

i have a ior and a mk 4. if your looking for a ffp scope, ior for the price is the better bang for your buck. if your not, i like the mk 4 4.5-14x50's. if you dont mind buying used, ior scopes can be found for reasonable prices, while leupolds, as usual, will go for so close to what they are new that i usually prefer to just buy them from the store... but there is always the odd good deal on one... keep your eyes open and jump if you find one.

Re: mk4 vs. ior

The MP-8 ret. of the IOR is hard to beat, I like it best of all the retical's I'v used. The glass in the IOR is MUCH better than any Mark 4, my 2-12x blows away all of my Mark 4's. (I have a 6-20x, 4-14x & 1.5-5x) Even the little 3x IOR I have is clearer than my Mark 4's. Also, my mark 4's don't always track as well as the IOR does. After useing IOR & NF scopes, I don't buy any Leupold scopes anymore. At one time the Mark 4 was all I bought. But after haveing alot of them come through with canted reticals, (and Leupold telling me it was OK) I looked at other's. With the price of the Mark 4's getting closer to the IOR & NF scope's, I switched to them. At some point I will sell all of my Mark 4's and replace them with either NF or IOR. I may put an USO on my GAP, which now sports the 6-20 Mark 4. It's your call, the Mark 4 is an OK scope, if you get a good one. But, the IOR is much clearer and you will be able to see more with less power. IOR also comes with ring's of your choice, $150+ saving's. Take a good look at NF as well and all the retical's they offer. The glass is more like the Leupold but the scope itself is much better. Sometimes it's worth the extra $10-$20 to try them all and send the other's back. This will take ALL the guess work out. Good luck with your choice.

What ff is saying is that a Leupold will hold its resale much better. Was watching a new/like-new IOR 2-12x 35mm on ebay last week. It went for $702...

That is about a 50% haircut, some would say a scalping, on the resale from new. If you buy used, seems the way to go; but probably need to investigate the warranty as a 2nd owner before you buy.
ETA: No warranty concerns for any owner, ever, from Leupold.

If you can afford to buy new IOR, and won't worry about a 50% loss on trade or outright sale; probably better off to pony up the extra $$ for a Nightforce NXS and have gear that will perform and keep's its value.

Then there are performance issues... The Mk4 6.5 and 4.5 50mm scopes have 90moa and 100moa of reticle adjustment, the IOR are 50 or 60 IIRC. Divide those #s in half unless you go 30 or 25moa angled scope base which costs you another $150 to $200 for a good one. The Mk4 probably won't need the base, especially if shooting a magnum or flat shooting 6.5 or 6mm.
