Actaully 1/4 MOA at 1000 yards is 2.6". Not that the tenth will make a difference, but if you are explaining it, you need to explain it accurately. (MOA = 1.047" @ 100 yards).

Re: MOA VS MIL

At 1000 yards, a scope which has true quarter-MOA adjustments should move the reticle 2.6 inches per click. A scope which has 0.1 mil adjustments should move the scope 3.6 inches per click.

If you're seriously interested in the gory details, you can read this:

Derivation of the Range Estimation Equations

Nota bene: The actual adjustments of a particular scope are not always accurate, and should be checked.

Re: MOA VS MIL

Thanks for all the advice. I am looking into getting a USO around feb, so that was the basis for the question. I think I will stick with MOA for all practical purposes.

There is also Inch Pre Hundred Yard (IPHY)which some USO's are in. Tell them what you want when you order. The IPHY is very easy to learn an use, if your ranging UKD at all.

Re: MOA VS MIL

Mil or MOA, it is a matter of personal preference. For all intensive purposes, mils are simpler and more intuitive than MOAs; they are a simple shifting of the decimal place, nothing more. Just make sure that you get matching turrets for whichever route you go; mathematical conversions are eliminated. In today's market, there is no reason to go with a mil reticle with MOA adjustments, unless you were offered a sick deal on a scope that you couldn't pass up.

That came off a little arrogant. I could have typed it out to the 3rd decimal if I wanted. I'm aware of the true values but I think the OP got my point. 1/4moa is a finer adjustment than 1/10 mil period, which was an answer to one of his questions. Most scopes have more error in the 1/4moa turrets than .1" at 1000yds anyway.

Its probably a stupid thing to get irritated about but I don't like to be told what I should say.

Mils are great too, probably a little better for fast paced tactical matches. I prefer 1/4moa because I shoot F-class too which IMO requires a finer adjustment. 1/4moa allows me to have a dual purpose optic.

Re: MOA VS MIL

It's very human to get irritated when people find our mistakes.

It doesn't mean we didn't make them, though.

I knew one writer who was so grateful when people found his that he gave them rewards. I think that was a smart thing to do.

Re: MOA VS MIL

Not many people have MOA reticles on the line...and when one does show up next to you and you have Mils...it makes for some very interesting shot calls. Not saying you can't do the math to convert it but it is slower.

I wouldn't be upset if the world was just mil/mil...lol.
