Is there an advantage to getting a reticle that uses MOA instead of Mils? I have only ever used MOA turrets, and it seems to me that an NPR 2 reticle would be better with MOA turrets than a MLR with MOA turrets... But would I be happier waiting for .1 Mil turrets with a MLR reticle?

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

Minutes are NOT better than MOA. One is not better than the other, they are just different. I prefer MOA and have done better than guys with Mills but it has been the other way many times as well. My advice is if you with either make sure your turrets match your reticle. That is more important than which one you go with

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

I debated this for a long time. As long as the reticle matches the turrets, it really didn't matter to me. But when I realized the value of having my spotter make wind calls for me with a FFP spotting scope with a reticle, well Bushnell makes a reasonable FFP w/ mil reticle for $400. If that's not good enough the Leupy is around a grand. The ONLY MOA spotting scope I could find was the US Optics for... well, let's just say I would have had to sell my truck.

No brainer for me. Mil's were an economic choice.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

Mils are universal, MOA is not, 1 Mil is 1/1000 of any unit of measurement you want to use, I recently made the change to a all Mil scope, and I will never go back to MOA, my NSX is going back to NF for a reticle and knob conversion.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

IME:

Mils is more popular with the Precision Tactical Rifle crowd. It's base-10 and a little easier to make corrections on the fly, almost everyone calls corrections in mils.

MOA is more popular with the High Power/F-Class crowd. The adjustment is finer and there's less time pressure. Also the crowd tends to be older and more comfortable with MOA. Call corrections in Mils with these guys and you may as well be talking Greek...

IMO as long as the reticle and adjustments match, both can be used very effectively. BTW I've also seen guys run Mil/MOA (old school) and be just as effective. They just got used to doing the correction in their head (not ideal but it works). Just have to learn it and stay consistent.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

It is just differnt numbers that you plug into the equation that makes it different. But all things being equal if I am beside a guy that is running a mil/mil set-up and I am using my Vortex Razor EBR 1 - MOA/MOA set-up we are going to come up with the same distance to the target in yards/meters. The difference will be the turret numbers are going to be different but we will still hit the target.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

In Army sniper school we were taught to compensate and guesstimate wind in MOA and our optics had mil dot reticles.

Mil adjustments are better in my opinion [in conjunction with a mil reticle], but the conversion from ranging a target, seeing wind and saying "that looks like 2MOA" to seeing wind in mils would take retraining and getting used to unfortunately.

explain to me why Mil is better than MOA...I am not being a smartass I am interested in the why...it seems to me it doesn't matter if the scope is MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL. I hear this alot but it usually comes down to what I have been taught and no real reasons.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

I went Mildot reticle, MOA turrets. It took me a little getting used to but i'm very comfortable with it now. I was taught by old school shooters. I'm planning to send my scope in at some point to get the zero stop turrets added and at that point i will change the reticle and get something MOA. I prefer working in inches and that makes MOA slightly easier for me.

Re: MOA vs. Mil.

It doesn't matter what system you choose, as long as you know it well. Pick something, learn it, live it, and you will be fine. This mil vs. moa debate has gone on for a long time, the answer is which ever works, and they both work well.

My only advice is get a matching mil/mil or moa/moa turret and reticle, other than that, shoot.......
