Rifle Scopes Moa vs mrad

Re: Moa vs mrad

They're both units of angular measurement.

A Minute Of Angle or MOA is equal to 1.0475" at 100yds. A scope with true 1/4 MOA adjustments will move impact .262" at 100yds.

A milrad is equal to 3.6" at 100yds. A scope with .1 milrad adjustments will move impact. .36" at 100yds.

That should get you started. Use the search function. There's tons of info on this topic around here.

Re: Moa vs mrad

To simplify it:
An MOA is one inch in 100 yards. (Its actually slightly more than 1", but starting out don't worry about it, just treat it like an inch for starters).

A mil is one of ANYTHING in 1000. Typically it is 1 meter in 1000 meters or 10 cm in 100 meters or 1 yard in 1000 yards, 1 inch in 1000 inches etc.

To make it more complicated:
MOA stands for minute of angle (there are 60 minutes in a degree). Mil stands for Milliradian (there are 2pi radians in 360 degrees). Their names have to do with how they are derived. They are actually ANGLES you see. But we put a cap on these angles and make triangles so they become ratios. Then we can actually USE them for shooting measurements.

Re: Moa vs mrad

Mike,
I'm new to all this as well and I will say this, Google is my friend! After Many, Many hours of reading and studying I now have a "working knowledge" of the two.
With that being said, understanding what they are, and understanding what they are and how they relate to putting a small bit of lead where you want... that's another thing altogether.

A Mildot master comes with a pretty good field guide that'll help tie it all together.

Cheers and good luck!

Re: Moa vs mrad

Anyone think Frank should start a "Noobs Playground" Section of the forum where basic questions get thrown around... or its just page upon page of useful stickies?

And like, if you ask a dumb ass question you get banned and sent to the noobs playground for a week!

Wooaahh that would make my day... my week even

I hear what vman is saying but the suggested solution is a little draconian!

I'd hate to see people discouraged from asking for help/advice.

As Rob points out, there is a thread about Optics FAQ's where this info can be found.

I don't think asking the question is the problem here....it is the apparent inability of many people to post without first researching.

No disrespect to the OP, but the "Post New Thread" button is only an inch or two above the Optics FAQ thread.

mike1113 - have you got this in your favourites? It greatly inmproves the standard search function:

Hope it helps

Re: Moa vs mrad

The problem is new guys come in and ask the same questions over and over and over and over and over and don't bother searching or even reading the stickies at the tops of the pages which were put there to make it so the same questions didn't have to be answered every other day. I don't think a noob playground would help though.

Re: Moa vs mrad

"Noobs Playground"...that's rich! If that were an option here, I'm sure I would have spent several time outs in it already. Which might not be so bad if there were some teeter totters...I'm just sayin.

Re: Moa vs mrad

I dont want to come across as a nasty person.

All im saying is that its the simple questions that google can easily answer, that keep diluting these threads with topics that are beaten to death.

Seriously there are often unwritten codes and norms that people follow in life... say thank you, say please, dont fart around women unless shes your wife, dont abuse little old ladies.

Same goes for forums... And a big one should be have a shot at asking google the question before you post it up on a forum.

Have you tried google? NO... then try google
Have you tried google? Yes... still no answer, then ask the forums

Am i being a troll?

Does this 56mm objective make my ass look fat?
