Model 70 opinions

Re: Model 70 opinions

I love a CRF winnie, but don't dug the PF... Might as well just get a Remmy in that case. Accuracy of either is goid. Trigger simpler than Remmy, much better safety on the winnie.

Yes, basically. It's the difference between "controlled round feed", and "push feed". CRF has the huge claw extractor, PF has tge little tooth in the bolt head. There are several other differences as well.

Some claim tge PF actions are stronger/stiffer etc etc... I guess I'm just a sucker for CRF.

I find pre/post 64 nomenclature confusing, because Winchester/USRAC/FNH made/make CRF actions after 1964, and Win/FN are currently making tge classic, CRF actions to this day. To me, "pre64" means built prior to 1964... The actual pre64s are cool and all, but I'll take a new FNH CRF action any day over an old winnie.

Re: Model 70 opinions

I have two Winchesters currently. One is a .300 WM ( a factory barreled action sitting in a McM edge), the other a GAP built .280AI. The 300WM is a M70 Classic built around '99, which is the same design as a Pre-64 - claw extractor, simple trigger design, 3-position safety, etc. the "claw" captures the case rim as the case is pushed by the bolt from the magazine and carries the cartridge into the chamber. The bolt can actually be removed from the action with the cartridge still being held by the claw. The 280AI is a "post-64" built around '80. The Post-64 design uses an extractor on the bolt face( very similar to a Savage), simple trigger design, 3-position safety, etc. These "post-64s are called push feed actions because they don't grab the cartridge and control it like the claw does on the pre-64/ Classics. Nowadays the Winchester M70 is produced by FN. The trigger has been redesigned but the claw extractor and 3-postion safety are still there.
LOTS of folks find the Pre-64s collectible and they can fetch a premium if in good original condition. There are many of these that we're produced for short periods of time in certain cartridges or with heavy barrels and so on which add to their "collectibility". Lots more info on the Winchesters , but hopefully this has helped you see the differences between the two

Re: Model 70 opinions

I have a pre-64 and a post-64. I kind of prefer the post 64 myself. If I do another build, I'll probably base it on a cheap post 64 action.

The breech cuts are simpler on the post 64, with no need for an extractor cut or coned breech. The extractor is just a simple sliding plate, which should be very strong and easy to service. Like the pre-64, the receiver is flat bottomed for easier stock inletting and bedding. The trigger is simple and good. The safety is one of the better designs around. There are several excellent scope bases on the market for them too.

There's really a lot to like about them.
