modern sniper show

Re: modern sniper show

Maybe to stabilize the the bullet at far distance since they are loosing some velocity going with the shorter barrel. They must have something figured out to justify it.I wouldn't think they would change the pill.

Re: modern sniper show

I would think that rifle twist is for stabilizing the projectile.Velocity would vary with the number of grooves the rifling has, barrel lengh, loads and so on.

Re: modern sniper show

Once again I wouldn't believe everything watched on tv. The Marine Corps is probably not going to change out barrels and twist rates anytime soon or chop barrels. In order to do that they are going to have to take every barrel off and junk them, then they will have to change velocities and elevation drop in all the sniper manuals handed out at sniper school. They are also going to have to thread all the new barrels for muzzle brakes and everyone would have to get back out on the range to verify there new come ups with the loss in velocity.

If you believe everything you read or watch I should have been carrying the XM8 in combat with a 20mm anti tank gun launcher.

This might happen down the road but I wouldn't expect it for a couple of years.

it is.
1 twist in 10 inches vs. 1 twist in 12 inches

+1

LOL!

Its funny, every time one of these shows comes out, everybody takes what was said as Gospel. Its like the Army Times Newspaper, every other month they have on their front cover "Your new combat rifle"............... Well its been several YEARS and I haven't seen anything replace the M-4 / M16 series yet.......

Re: modern sniper show

Maybe this is related to what was hinted at during the show ...

10--M40 series Sniper Rifle
Solicitation Number: M6785409I1134

M40 Improved Barrel RFI draft #4 29 Jun 09

PM IW is conducting a market survey for an improved barrel for the M40A5 Sniper Rifle. The desired solution should be compatible with all other parts currently used to build the M40A5. Upon receipt and review of responses, PM Infantry Weapons may choose to purchase samples with which to conduct testing during 1st Quarter, Fiscal Year 2010 (1QFY10).

The proposed product should have the following attributes:
Design
a. Must be chambered to fire 7.62 x 51mm NATO standard ammunition.
b. Must not degrade the current precision of the M40A5 when using DODIC AA11 (CTG, 7.62MM NATO SPEC BALL M118 SNGL RD). Current precision is defined as 1.0 Minutes of Angle (MOA), as measured by extreme vertical and horizontal spread, at all ranges out to 914 meters (1000 yards).
c. Should be optimized for use with DODIC AB39 (CTG, CALIBER 7.62MM, SPECIAL BALL, LONG RANGE).
d. Length : should be less than 24 inches.
e. Should accept a finish in accordance with Mil-Std 171E.
f. Should be compatible with all parts currently used to build the M40A5, specifically the standard Remington Model 700 Short Action receiver (P/N 202794), the Surefire Muzzle Brake (NSN: 1005-01-565-6165; P/N:MB762SSAL/RE) and Surefire Suppressor (NSN 1005-01-565-6164, P/N FA762SS-BK).
g. Should be compatible with DoD-approved petroleum, oils, and lubricants that are authorized for use/cleaning.

Re: modern sniper show

Not sure. If you recall what (I think he was a 1st Sgt) said was they were going suppressed in addition to 20" w/ 1:10" twist.

As previously mentioned, the Marine Corps is never really rolling in the $$ like the other branches. They would probably only do a switch at the point of barrel replacement, or on a small specialized scale to start.

Re: modern sniper show

The Marine Corps already went over to suppressed rifles. The M40A5 comes with a SureFire muzzle brake as well as suppressor. The Marine Corps is slow to change and even with a solicitation I cannot see them going to a shorter barrel anytime soon. This is just from my personnel experience.

Re: modern sniper show

Last night, the last show of the series, Advanced Sniper, showed the students of a Sniper Team Leader course doing angled shooting. The narrator said the students were using a "slope doper" to measure the angle, when, in fact, they were using a Mildot Master.

The narrator explained that the students used the Pythagorean Theory to calculate the shot, and gave an explanation which caused me to believe that the students were still being taught the Rifleman's Rule for angled shots.

I hope that readers of Sniper's Hide will by now know that the better way is to measure the actual distance of the shot, then multiply their dope for the actual distance by the cosine of the angle - which can also be calculated using a Mildot Master.

For a reference, see Angled Fire Explained.

Lindy,

On the list of Gems of knowledge.

What are your thoughts about summarizing a few of these items and making them a sticky?

Mechanical Offset (now in the online training)
Advanced Rifleman

Your thoughts as always are welcome.

Re: modern sniper show

Chiller:

Thanks for your kind words.

I suspect that not many people read stickies, although I could be wrong about that.

In addition, I'm not a moderator on this site, so I don't think I have the ability to create "stickies".

When I encounter something I think is really significant, I create a web page on my site for that.

Those notes may be found here:

http://www.arcanamavens.com/LBSFiles/Shooting/Downloads/References/

I also list them on my main page:

http://www.arcanamavens.com

I have a notepad on my computer of frequent references, like the Sierra External Ballistics page, and I maintain files on my own posts on such issues as mechanical offset, as well as other peoples', so I can simply cut and paste them when the issue arises again - as it probably will...

Re: modern sniper show

Lindy, I've read some of your articles on arcanamavens - You sir, are the man! That is one of the best links ever posted on the Hide. I never leave there without learning something. Thank you.

Re: modern sniper show

Lindy once the jagoff finishes my front page I will get you a section so you can use the members free area to post your articles if you like, so people dont' have to such your bandwidth -- being a retired guy on a fixed income and all.
