I want to be able to run VLD's or similar out of my Remington without going to a detachable magazine. Is there an acceptable modification to the factor magazine?
Re: Modify Remington magazine to accept .223 VLD's
to the factory mag,not realy ,you can install a Wyatt's mag box but it requires a little metal work. It'x best to use a mill but i have seen it done by hand with a dremal tool
Re: Modify Remington magazine to accept .223 VLD's
Actually the process is quite simple. remove the spacer from the back of your mag box. You'll have to grind away a some small welds, but is should only take a few minutes. Now, go to your hardware store and get some 1/4" x 1" aluminum stock. Cut to fit the back of the mag box (you are creating a hew, shorter spacer) and jb weld it to the mag box. You can use the same spring/follower, but you will have successfully lengthened your mag box for to allow longer rounds. No other modifications are necessary. A pic of this mod can be seen about halfway down this page

A number of us shooting 223AIs here on the site have modified our mag boxes in similar fashions.
In fact, if you want to do this, PM me your address - I've got some aluminum stock left over from when I did mine

A great idea, and so simple that I never would have thought of it! I see longer ammo in the future for my Rem .223!
