Monopod/Stock opinions for my benchrest Colt AR

I'm fortunate that our local gunclub provides 100 to 1000 yard shooting and I'm far from being an F-Class contender, but wanted opinions from those here that I've been reading for the last few years.

I've a CAR-A3 HBAR Elite AR-15 (CR6724) with a Harris 6-9 BiPod and am looking to add a monopod to augment the A2 stock. I'd like a little more stability at the rear and prefer something attached rather than sandbags.

I saw the CTK precision monopod that I could put directly on my stock but see very little written about it here.

If I move away from the A2, it seems that there are quite a few that like the Magpul PRS and Monopod like this:

This CAA SRS stock intrigues me, but I don't seem to find much support in favor of CAA.

I'd like some candid advice and know I can get that here.

Thanks in advance!

Ive tried monopods on the bench and in the prone...they are nice but a rear bag seems soo much better.

if your looking for the best set-up for bench shooting in my mind, you should look for a stock with a straight comb on the bottom for excellent tracking.

Check out the Choate E-2

Thanks for the advice on the E-2, I hadn't considered how this would play out shooting prone. When we were out this last weekend, I realized that I'd left the bag at home so that's what prompted me to pursue this option. After searching I was impressed with the way the CAA-SRS looked, but knew that looks can be deceiving. There's very little written about CAA as most posts seem to take a Magpul PRS or nothing stance. I appreciate your input.

Schwazche, we make a sling stud that replaces the fixed loop on your A2, then you can attach our BT01, BT04 or BT05 with or without the Quick Knobs.

I've taken the liberty to attach a link of a young mans shooting success using a bipod and one of our monopods. link

If approached with an open mind, you can have good success replacing a bean bag with a monopod and eliminate the possibility of leaving/forgetting your bean bag.

I would vote in favor of the Magpul PRS/monopod combo.Keep in mind it gives you length of pull/ cheek rest adjustments to help you get bedded in properly. You may find, however, that the PRS/sandbag combo is actually hard to beat...

Re: Monopod/Stock opinions for my benchrest Colt AR

I have been using the Magpul PRS for a few years with a rear bag. One is not allowed a monopod in F-class.

I like the PRS stock with my rear bag as the cover for the rail acts like a slide in the bag. I adjust my aim with the rear bag.

Kasey,
Thanks for the links and information. Just to let you know, I went ahead and bought a BT04 and stud for my A2 stock. I figured that I could always put another stock on later, but this would get me something to try in the meantime.

Thank you Sir.

Thanks guys. After what I've seen and confirmed by your posts, I believe I'll go ahead and get the Magpul PRS and wait on the monopod since I just bought one for my A2 stock. This way, if I choose to try F-Class, I'll have options.

Again I really appreciate everyone's input.

Thanks Gents!

Re: Monopod/Stock opinions for my benchrest Colt AR

I have the Magpul PRS on a couple of my AR builds and have shot with a:

Harris 6-9" front: w/ same rear monopod you have in your PRS pic.
Harris 6-9" front: sandbags rear
Harris bipod folded up sitting on sandbags: Sandbags rear.

The sandbags on both I cant beat.

Re: Monopod/Stock opinions for my benchrest Colt AR

Schwazche, thanks for giving us a try. Here is a method to experiment with; When shooting, I always keep my off hand on the monopod knob, with the heel of my hand contacting the deck. If I'm trying to shoot for group, I squeeze the knob more or less, making that muscle on the heel of the hand contract(raising) or relax (lowering) which makes the smallest final adjustment in the sight picture. I've seen guys adjust the monopod, then remove their hand from the monopod and put it elsewhere which makes no sense and ruins the desired shooting form. The Accu-Shot monopods were designed to become a "control handle" for the rifle, so hold it to control it!

longrange30, I thank you for giving us a try and I do not question your results. In fact I use to tell people that you could get better groups shooting off sandbags, but the portability and consistency of the bipod/monopod setup was the offset. However, when you get testimonials like the one posted above in the "Link" it becomes hard to make that argument.
