More precise priming?

I have been trying to learn the finer points of precise primer seating and after alot of reading I am trying to grasp the concept of trying to use equal seating force each time for consistency...... some folks even as critical as using a seating tool with a force gauge for uniformity.
But on the other hand it would seem that the actual seating DEPTH of the primer would be more critical regardless of the seating force needed to get it there and this would seem to require an entirely different tool and methodology.
For a simple scheme would it not be easier for repeatable uniformity to just seat the primer even to the bottom of the case by using a wide primer head so the primer is automatically seated when the tool bottoms on the case?

Re: More precise priming?

thanks and I should have prefaced the question in relationship to long-range precision benchrest shooting for printing little groups. This is mostly a tactical forum but I gleen some pretty technical info from some of the range geeks here. I am trying to confirm or debunk the fact that primer seating can affect accuracy in a meaningful way- and what way.

Re: More precise priming?

you can not just seat the primer flush with the case head as most primer pockets are deeper than the primer this will cause a lot of inconsistancies and kill your groups. if you want to get technical cut all of your primer pockets to the same depth then get a primer seater with an adjustable stop and seat all primers into a clean pocket to the same depth. i have RCBS strip loading primer seaters the bench mounted one can be set to a specific depth but i use the hand primer most of the time and feel the primer bottoming into the pocket it works well for me.

Re: More precise priming?

If you seek the truth on this question do this. Seat 10 rounds firmly into the primer pocket. Seat 10 rounds not as deep or meerly "flush" with the case head. Fire them in 10 round groups seggregated as the original groups. Fire them across a chronograph and holding your favorite hold on a good target. You'll find that leaving them at flush with the case head will detract from accuracy and that group will have bigger Standard Deviation numbers. The better seated rounds will be more accurate and have more acceptable numbers over the chronograph.

Good luck.
