A friend recently gave me his Mossberg ATR 100 - .270win as he is going back to the middle east and thought i would get more enjoyment out of it (and I don't think he wanted to leave it at his mothers). Anyways...to the point...I know its a pretty low-end bolt action, but just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this type. I've shot it a few times now, and it is pretty jumpy..it has a harris bipod on it, and when I shoot from a table, I feel like I really have to hold the rifle in place, is this because it is just really meant to be a light weight hunting rifle? Maybe another cause is the thin barrel=lots of barrel whip=poor control...?

I have been shooting since about the age of 8, I own several rifles/shotguns, so by no means am I new to shooting, but never had a 270win before. Is this par for the course with this type? I still have my money on a mix of the low weight of the rifle and thin barrel equating to poor recoil handling.

Appreciate any thoughts....thanks

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

It is an extremely cheap rifle in every aspect of the word. I truly believe they were designed for Walmart to sell to hunters who would shoot three rounds a year. (two to zero and one at a game animal).

Shoot it if you want, but I think they are a waste of good ammo. I would just put it in the safe and hand it back to your buddy when he returns.

Buy a decent quality rifle and when he gets back from the sandbox let him see what a quality rifle feels like.

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

I basically knew that it was of a pretty low quality from the start..i think it retails for a whopping $300 (i spent more on a rail system for my other rifle). Currently doing a debate on a new .308...the age old question of Remington 5R vs Remington 700p...probably end up with the 5R, prefer the 24" barrel to the 26".

Also I've seen a bunch of guys on here with "trainer" .22 rifles..is this purely a ammo cost saving approach to shooting at the range, it seems as thought guys still spend a considerable amount on them. Is that the main reason?

A .22LR trainer is a cost saver in the long run, however there are several other advantages.

If your home range only goes out to 200-300 yards, a .22LR will let you work on wind calls.

You can run a brick of .22LR through a trainer and not get beaten up. Even those of us who are used to the recoil get a little weary after a couple hundred rounds. You can concentrate on pure fundamentals.

Some of us do get carried away with it though. I have a 40XB that I keep thinking needs an AICS and trigger. That would make it the second most expensive rifle in my safe.

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

If I was going to look into getting a trainer...it seems like a great idea...where should i start? I used to have a 10/22 ruger, but wasn't really a big fan...

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

What trainer depends on what your primary rifle is.

If you run a Remington 700, then a 40X is a natural choice. However they are not cheap.

If you run a AR type platform there are tons of AR conversions.

If you have a Savage, then a Savage MkII is a good choice.

Skunkworks is supposed to have a 700 pattern .22LR repeater out soon.

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

Yea, I looked up a M40 XMBR (i believe that was the model) and it was something along the lines of $2400. That seems a bit crazy....im sure it's a great piece of harware..but still

Re: Mossberg ATR 100

These make excellent trainers.

However they were quite a bit less expensive when CMP released their last shipment. Now that the supply is in private hands the prices have jumped back up.

Most .22's seem to be a reduced size. The 40x is the same size as the M700 and accepts most of the same accessories. In fact my 40XB weighs more than my 700 in .308.
