Gunsmithing Mounting holes for scope base?

Is their a benefit to having the mounting holes enlarged to the 8/40 or should I just leave it alone at 6/48. Also whats the cost to have them enlarged?

Yes. This is what my smith recommends. You booger up a 6...then you can always go 8. That's sound advice especially since it's only a .308. Good luck!

YES- increased clamping force and retention strength.

I'd never looked at scope base holes with this perspective. Very sound advice.
