I want to do a little maintenance on the rail of one of my rifles. Should I completely detatch the scope from the rings do the mx then reinstall. Or should I simply detatch the rings from the rail then reinstall it.
Hmmm. I’ve done both ways. Depends on what you have to do. Anything that would require me to maintenance the rail would likely cause me to at least check the scope rings etc as well. Whether that necessitates removal is your call. Sometimes I clean and reinstall. Generally for minor stuff, just remove the rings with scope attached like mentioned above.
With good quality rings and mounts, I leave the rings on the scope, do what I need to do, remount the scope and verify return-to-zero. It’s always right where it should be, but verifying gives peace of mind.
Detach rings from base and do what you need to do and put it back on. Simple. Don't make it any harder than it has to be. Have done it for many years and moved scopes from rifle to rifle this way and never an issue.
Thanks. That's what I was assuming would work. I just didn't want to somehow put stress on the optic. figured it was rigid enough that wouldn't be a problem.
