Movie - Battle of Midway

I didn't care for the original Midway with Charlton Heston.
If you're old enough to remember, the original was the first movie with Sensurround. The woofers in the theater would kick on during a combat scene, shaking the walls and seats, then turn off after the scene was over.

They'll probably spend 2hr on the pilot and his jap girlfriend, won't mention coral sea because 99% of moviegoers won't know WTF they're talking about and 15min on midway.

Not related to the movie but rather just a pet peeve of mine. As a guy addicted to retro games, I've always hated how 1943 was called Battle of Midway when it happened in 1942 not 1943!

The 1976 was one of my favorites as a kid- was one of the first VHS tapes we owned.....back when VHS tapes were $100 in 1980s dollars! I even managed to go to Hawaii when I was older and fly the T6 they use in the movie still painted up like a Mitsubishi A6M (Zero fighter). In fact flew the same bombing run in it that the Japs did on Pearl, but obvious broke off before passing over the national monument.

Will be interested to see if the modern one they are still trying to break the Japs code. After reading Day of Deceit by Robert Stinnett it casts doubt on alot of that- seems we had them broken long before.

Love the 1976 version.

I want to believe that the new version will be good, but the realist in me knows it will be too PC. Like instead of focusing on the battle plans and the courageous/daring pilots it will focus on Japanese Internment camps and racism and oppression, and a black sailor will argue with another black sailor over how they aren't even allowed to be pilots and slavery and oppression, and another sailor/pilot is struggling with his homosexuality but can't tell anyone because of the oppressive atmosphere, and the Japanese soldiers and pilots weren't bad people, just misundtood, etc

Looks soo good

I enjoyed the old 70s Midway movie with the all star cast

I have it on my DVR now in fact
Ya, it was an all star cast in ‘76.
Not just Charleston Heston, but ... Tom Selleck (MGnum PI), Eric Estrada (CHIPS), Pat Morita (Karate Grandpa - lol), etc.

Just ribbin’ ya. But add Burt Reynolds, an orangutan, and Lonni Anderson, and we got another 70s gonzo movie!

just jokin. The new Midway can’t be worse than Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck .... can it?

If it's that bad, they'll have me rooting for the japs.

I remember going to the MALCO as a family to this. I don’t remember the special sound though.

Sadly I wonder how many families would go to something like this today. Granted of course this new one won’t be historically correct (not that the first one was 100% either).

The original Midway was an outstanding movie...

And lots of 'up and comers' got their starts in bit parts... like Tom Selleck who played an Admiral's aid.

Expect the new one will be a disappointment, though. All CGI and short-attention-span action. The original went into everything from the Purple code to the strategery.

The new one mainly motivates me to re-watch the original. Which also happens to be on my DVR.

Cheers,
