Hey guys I’m moving to Minnesota in about 5 weeks.

Im from a very gun friendly state (KS) and was curious how bad it was up there ?

It largely won’t affect my position on moving as , from a monetary perspective very little is going to get in the way of that .

Are conceal carry permits hard to come by? Whats that process look like training time wise, cost, and likely hood of approval? Do I have to live in the state for X amount of time before I can get one ?

Will be living in the metro area south of St Paul in a nice suburb lol figured area might have an impact on the severity of oppression I’ll endure

I have looked around in the mn gov site, I was curious if the process was streamline and if they actually approved the permits ! Not used to this as ks is a constitutional carry state

It is gun friendly, but now that the radicals have perfected election stealing, they are starting their civilian disarmament campaigning and push to be just like CA in every way. This legislative session was crazy. They introduced the worst anti-gun bills ever, most was defeated but some is still in play. Just like a lot of states, great people here but the city is dominating the rest of the state with communist ideals and I'm not joking they have perfected election stealing here.

It is a shall issue state, silencer friendly, open carry (but I would not recommend that in the metro), AR friendly, etc. My last permit to carry renewal was submitted on a Friday, I had it in my mailbox on Tuesday. So yes, very gun friendly and in fact until just a few years back, was more gun friendly than TX. I just don't know how long that will last.

Once you get settled in, support the Gun Owner's Caucus (below). They are doing amazing work and are our best champions. There are some scam orgs out there, but these guys are legit and they put in long hours working to preserve our rights. Sounds like you are going to Dakota County, the sheriff there has been on the quiet side of supporting the sanctuary county push. This does not mean he's anti-gun, the sheriffs around the metro are careful with their wording because they have to win elections so some of them are on your side but not vocal about it - https://gunowners.mn/our-programs/minnesota-sheriffs/

    1. Easy to get.
    2. Take a Permit To Carry class, normally 2-3 hrs long. Approx $100. If your backgrounds clear, you get a PTC.
    3. I don't know.

In MN, it is a permit to carry. Once you have your permit, you can legally carry open or concealed. It is not called a conceal and carry permit like some other states. But people often call it that anyway. Your PTC is good for 5 years and doubles as a permit to purchase. Your PTC is valid in a lot of other states.

Handgunlaw.us is a pretty good resource for a specific states laws on guns. Click on the state and it will go to that states page.

it would be smarter to get a head of the curve before home prices get to high and move to texas now rather than later + you being a pro 2a enthusiast could be taking the place of some socialist hopping to flip that state blue from california or new york .

Hello, you can pm me if you want good info....for gods sake, dont take a 2-3 hr carry class.....

I would love that ! Unfortunately I’m taking over a business and that business is located in Minnesota! They did a 7mn dollar job in 2018 . Maybe if the environment is right I can move it down there in 5 years !

Nope, I'm in Wash Co. As I stated I had my last PTC in my mailbox in 3 business days it's like they are racing to see who can give out a permit the fastest. I've never had an issue here and I don't get anti-gun vibes at all from the sheriff, he might just be a little quiet for election purposes.

Thank you @atomic41 ! Makes me feel a little better . Any suggestion for the training course ?

Faribault Pistol and Rifle has a great 600 yard rifle range with steel targets as well as 5 pistol bowls. Gopher, in Harris MN has a 1000 yard rifle range as well as other ranges.

Minnesota does have pretty damn good statutes for carry. Better than Texas in that you can carry in any bar. None of this 51% bullshit. Just don't drink if you're carrying. Also, if you choose to carry in a private business that displays a "no guns" sign and are called out on it and asked to leave, there is no offense if you comply by leaving. If you don't leave, it's a petty misdemeanor but you have to really ask for it. They did finally put up metal detectors at the State Fair gates but that's pretty much for 13/80.

I rarely drink , maybe 1-2 times per year ! Those hangover stick around wayy to long

You are a fucking idiot for moving here.

With that said, ptc is easy. Find a 1 hr class or something close to it. The process is straight forward and easy. Your local Leo will handle the process.

Better take a fair amount of defensive shooting classes if you are in the cities.

    Best of luck to you.

The just proposed a bill to make pedophiles a protected class.

I’ll be like 20 mins from Minneapolis

Trust me man if the money wasn’t so substantial I wouldn’t be going .. I’m a small town guy from rural Ks.

I shoot a fair amount of idpa , hopefully never have to do utilize my skill set !

And that makes me sick….. wtf is wrong with people

i work all over the state and the metro. pretty much stay out of sketchy places in the evening and night and you are fine. the bullshit doesnt seem to start until evening or night....dont know why that is, but it does seem to be the case. i have seen a few shitheads during the day, but that is pretty rare.

If you think they're gun friendly, you haven't lived in a free state.

They would arrest me for driving my truck just like I do on any given day in neighboring states. Truck guns ready and loaded are a big no no there. Fuck that.

I had several job offers for 2-5x my current pay. I told them all no before they could finish the offer. Minneapolis is a complete shit hole and it's only getting worse. It's already spread, and the rural areas are fudd country because "you can't see far enough to need a rifle, just grab a shotgun, it's all you need!"

Enjoy all the Samalians and the gang shit they brought with them.

Unless you live in a gated and fenced community, lock your shit and insure it. The locks are only there so that you have it to use sometimes, insurance for the several times a year you'll come up missing anything not nailed down.

Yeah , I am used to living in free state.

The cops don’t ask if you have a weapon and don’t care if have an AR on the front seat.

Gonna be a bit of a culture shock for sure

Things just got weird(er) here - re:MN gun laws.

Not exactly sure what form these laws will take, but it’s bad.

If I were the OP, I’d consider living in Hudson WI, which is just over the river and is a commutable distance.

WI just over the border was going to be my suggestion as well. Nice country west-northwestern WI.

The democrats are now in full control in Minnesota and with the voting law changes they rammed thru .
The leftist democrats will permanently control the state. Just like California.
Plus all the other bills that they passed on a straight party vote. The state is headed to hell in a handbasket.
Moving here is insane. Any business will suffer from the zero carbon emissions bill that will skyrocket energy costs. Plus the heavy regulation and never ending tax increases.
They raised tabs and registration fees 160% and added another 5 to 6 billion in new taxes. That's on top of spending a 15 billion dollar surplus.
They raised the state budget 40% this session and now made the state budget automatically go up at the yearly inflation rate. On top of normal budget increases.
Minnesota is now the cold California and people and businesses will be fleeing the state . At least the smart ones will!

Minnesota democrats will make every working class person in the private sector a slave.
The zero carbon bullshit bill alone is expected to increase every household in the state to pay an additional $4 to $5k per year in heating and electricity. That alone will have most people losing a month or more worth of their labor/wages.
    Yes, moving here is foolish.

Find a way to move to the North Woods area (North of Brainerd is a good start). Twin Cities can suck it. (I am from MN)

moving for monetary incentives, but it sounds like I won’t be getting to keep any of the additional income I’ll be earning … sheesh guys I might have screwed the pooch ..

Apparently you do not know ANY somalis then.........
And they all drive like they are the only one on the road! Driving below the posted speed limit out on the highway in the far left passing lane among other things. And everyone wonders why they are burning down Mosque's

MN is a communist state. Don't come. If I could leave, I would. They just passed red flag laws and more laws on the transfer of semi auto weapons. This state is truly fucked.

That being said, there is a solid group of excellent 3 Gun, USPSA, and long range precision shooters here. But the political climate here is as bad a California, CT or NY.

ah....MN aint THAT bad. even in minneapolis i really have never felt uncomfortable. and get outside of the metro, and it is rustic. easy going. madison and milwaukee are far worse. long story short, don't go looking for trouble and you should be fine.

the winter and cold is the real motherfucker. it's a good place....may through october.

I'll mention that to all my friends from MN who moved here to TN.

I was born and raised about 45 minutes north of the metro, left for a few years, and moved back.

The political climate here is 180 degrees of the shithole where .gov is wrecking the rest of the state.

Lots of great, like minded, people once you’re outside the metro area.

Now that road construction season is in full bloom, traffic can be a dumpster fire. Especially if you’re headed north on a Friday afternoon.

    Welcome to Minnesota!

Well, Saturday a Dem Senator from entered a bill that pretty much bans all semi auto guns.
The Democrats will try and ram this thru in the last week of the session. Which is this week.
You can count on more of the same next year. They are doing all this with a one seat majority.
Unlike the Republicans. The democrats do the most damage every time they gain control.
Last time they had all three houses. They only increased the state budget 30%.

I have never heard more people talking about leaving this state . Than in the last 4 months.
I expect that number to dramatically increase in the next year as people become aware of all the laws and taxes.
    plus fees.
That the Democrats rammed thru this year. Dumpster fire is the phrase that comes to mind!

Although this thread is a bit old, I thought I'd share some information about gun laws in Minnesota. Minnesota has relatively lenient gun laws compared to some other states. As for conceal carry permits, the process involves completing a training course, which typically takes around 8 hours. The cost varies, but it's usually around $100. There is no specific residency requirement, so you can apply as soon as you establish residency in Minnesota. On a different note, if you're interested in moving from Massachusetts to Florida, AOAmoving.com provides long-distance moving services. They can help make your move smooth and hassle-free. Best of luck with your move to Minnesota!
