Muzzle brakes and accuracy

How would a muzzle brake affect your groups? I had a new barrel and brake installed on my Savage. Due to communication issues the brake was not installed when I got the rifle back. I shot some tight groups before sending it back for the brake to be installed. Once I got it back with the brake I shot the same charge and noticed the groups opened up a bit. Maybe I was just having a great day the first time.
