I did my first OCW test today for my .308. After alot of reading and mixed opinions on what's best to start off with, I chose to shoot at 100 yards because I can do it on my back porch. After review of this OCW, I will continue my shooting at 300yds for further/better testing. I will try to give as many details as possible, but if I fail to include something please let me know.

    Rifle:
GAP Hospitaller w/ 26" Bartlien barrel
    Surgeon action
    KMW Sentinel stock
    NightForce 5.5-22x56
    Atlas bipod
All shooting was done prone of a bipod and rear bag.

    Weather/Conditions:
Started at 5pm with temps around 82 degrees
Finished up around 7pm with temps around 73-75 degrees
Sunny with light variable wind, but at my 6 o'clock so wasn't a factor
All shooting done "Round Robin" 2 minutes apart shot to shot.

    Load data:
New/unfired Lapua cases - Neck sized, chamfered, deburred
    Lapua 155 Scenars
    BR2 primers
    Varget
Charge weights started at 45.9 and went up to 47.5 in .2gr increments. I loaded 3 rounds each of each charge weight. From speaking with a few people that had this similar rifle and shot this same load, I knew that I would most likely see best results around 46.5-47.5

At 47.5 I still did NOT see any real signs of pressure. Maybe just the slightest bit of extractor mark, but nothing significant. I think I should have continued on up to 47.7 as I wasn't seeing any pressure and I beleive I was seeing a good node at 47.5. All shots broke well with the exception of shot # 1 on target # 1. It wasn't a called flyer, it felt right so I am not sure what happened since shots #2 & #3 of that charge weight seemed to shoot better. My only regret is not yet having a chronograph to see my SD/ES, but it will be on the "To Buy" list this week before I move out to 300yds and 600yds.

Here are the target pics. Please review them and let me know what you all think.

I would shoot 47.1, 47.3, and 47.5 at 300 to see where the impact is. Right now they look very close to impact from one load to the other. So with my understanding of the OCW is that 47.3 would be the load.

47.4 is supposed to be the 155 Scenar with Lapu case load.
    47.8 is for Win cases.

The important feature in this string of groups is that the pattern changed from vertical to horizontal from 47.3 to 47.5. This represents either an anti-node or a true node--most likely a true OCW node.

SO now concentrate on 47.2 through 47.6 in steps of 0.1 make 10 shots in each step. With luck they may all shoot well (a mark of a real OCW node). Then run some bullet jump experiments to finalize the recipie.

I see that you are doing "round robin" 2 min. apart. Are you doing any barrel cleaning between different loads.

    Re: My 1st OCW w/ 155 Scenars - Please review/comment

No, I did not clean the barrel between loads. I cleaned it before I started, fired 5 fouling shots, and then started the OCW. It only consisted of 27 shots (9 groups of 3), so I wasn't worried with fouling. In real world applications, if I can't shoot 30 rounds without having to clean the barrel due to flouling, then I need a new barrel. I did clean after the the final shot to see how dirty it was. It cleaned up 100% with 3 wet patches of Butch's Bore Shine, followed by 2 dry patches, then 1 with a lil Rem oil on it. A good match barrel should clean up relatively easy.

    Trevor,
What is your COAL? I used to load for a TRG22, and since it's mag allowed me to seat the bullets waaaay out there, I worked up to 47.5gr of Varget with the 155 scenar, and had great results. My new stick(its a 308) uses AI mags, and with that I have to keep the rounds shorter. Now I worry about compressing the charge too much @ 2.815" COAL.

I'm just starting load development with this new rifle, and am wanting to use the same componets....155 Scenars, varget, and Lapua cases.

The other variable I'm fighting is the TRG had a 26" tube and the new gun has an 18" tube.

    TIA,

    Will
