Well, I've had a bad case of the wants for a Remington 700 for a long time now. I ended up going with the 700 XCR (Extreme Conditions Rifle) Compact Tactical. For those not too familiar with this rifle, it is outwardly very similar to the Remington 700P LTR. I bought it in .308 Winchester, and it has a 20" fluted barrel. It comes with a green Bell and Carlson "Medalist" stock which features a full-length aluminum bedding block. The XCR comes with Remington's new 40-X trigger (which is the best trigger I've ever felt on a gun).

Differences between the XCR Compact Tactical and the LTR are the stock (Bell and Carlson vs. HS Prescision), and the XCR is stainless steel with Ionbond finish whereas the LTR is carbon steel with parkerized finish. In my humble opinion, the XCR action is much smoother than the LTR (I briefly owned an LTR in the past). All in all, I greatly prefer the XCR Compact and think I have found my ideal bolt gun.

In an attempt to keep this rifle fairly light, yet still bomb-proof (in case I ever take up hunting), I went with Badger Ordnance alloy rings and base instead of steel. The scope was a tough choice. I'm new to long-range shooting but I've always drooled over Nightforce scopes. Unfortunately I couldn't decide which reticle to go with and I was also low on cash. In a rare moment of logical thinking, I realized that if I couldn't even decide on a reticle I had no business spending $1,500 on a scope. I read lots of threads and reviews on scopes on various sites. I noticed that the SWFA "super sniper" SS 3-9x42 scope came very highly recommended in the sub-$1,000 dollar scope range. For a modest price of $550 (with the snipershide promo code), the SWFA SS 3-9x42 comes with a lot of good features. It has a 30mm tube, first focal plane reticle, mil-dot reticle with .1 Mrad turrets, etc. And according to reviews, good glass to boot. When I got mine I was very pleased with the feeling of quality I got from it.

To round out the accessories I bought an Eagle Industries stock pack (the new version which has the ammo slots inside the pouch instead of outside), and a TIS (Tactical Intervention Specialists) sling. Unfortunately the sling came with the wrong type of adapters so I have to return them and get the Talon sling swivels. For a case I plan to buy an Eagle drag bag. No, I don't need a drag bag since I'm not a sniper, but they are very tacticool.

Once I get a chance to take it to the range I'll give an update. I'll also try to take some better pictures of it, these were the best I could do in 10 minutes while I had my wife's camera.

Thanks Moose! That second picture was edited with the "WWII photo brown" tint to give it a classic look. Hehe.

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Congratulations on the new shooter! I also recently picked one up in a 223. Haven't had it out yet, but I do have the LR version in 308. It shoots lights out and I'm sure yours will as well.

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

What bullets do you plan on using in it?

I don't reload yet, so I'm planning on starting with several brands of match 175 grain stuff. Hornady, Black Hills, Federal, and Southwest. I'll see which work best in my rifle and go from there. I also have a 200 round battle pack of mil-surplus stuff for when the zombies come.

Great looking rifle. How far do you plan on shooting it out to?

Thanks Snipedogg. My local range only has paper targets to 200 yards and a metal gong at 325. So for the most part those will be my ranges. Once I've gotten comfortable at 200 I'd love to find someplace further. We have a fairly close range to 900 and another to 1200 although both are owned by private clubs (to whcih I don't belong).

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Oh man looks like your gonna have to get a club membership haha! I think you'll find the 175 grain bullets to shoot great at all those distances. You might want to get into reloading once you start shooting at 900+

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Congrats on your purchase...great looking set up.

I really wanted a XCR but went with a sps.tac instead and just customized it. You might want to get an oversized handle as it adds to the smoothness of the action.

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Congrats bud, Been doin alot of shootin lately with mine and have been shooting between .4 and .5 moa with hand loaded 165gr sierra gamekings. With 168gr federal gold metal match it will shoot the factory ammo about the same, and havnt had the chance to tune the match bullets in yet. Please let me know how yours shoots

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Good looking package, Jedi! Have you had a chance to take it to the range yet? I am in the market for a new rifle, and I like the looks of what you have put together.

Mate - the XCR Compact Tactical is such a nice rifle for the price.. go for it!

I just bought my first rifle - the same XCR Compact. I was lucky - I got a good deal because the shop was sold out of LTRs and now I'm counting my lucky stars because I much prefer this beautiful model now. I especially like the adjustable trigger. I think the only thing that could make this rifle look even better would be a fluted bolt with a Cerakote finish, just for the heck of it.

Oh and I'm picking up a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56mm in the NPR1 moa reticle and hi speed adj turrets in TWO DAYS!! Im so damn excited! XCR + Nightforce alloy rings and base + NXS = awesome

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

If you're to get a Pelican hard case, which one would be appropriate for this length of rifle? the 1720 ?

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Should be a shooter. I used to have one in green and 26" instead. Sub MOA out of the box with the right pills.

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

I finally got my new furniture for my Remington 700 XCR Compact Tactical (in .308). I went with an Accuracy International AICS 2.0 folding stock. My primary mode of transportation to the range is my motorcycle so I wanted something fairly short for the bike. With the 20" barrel and folding stock it comes to exactly 32". Not too shabby. In fact, with a sock covering the barrel it is pretty discrete. In this picture it is in my Kifaru Express backpack, which is not a large pack at all.

The Harris bipod is on a LaRue Tactical quick detach mount, mounted on a picatinny rail I had added to the bottom of the stock:

Only one brief (one hour) trip to the range so far, and the light was dimming (yep, the excuses are starting already :)). My 5 shot group at 100 yards with 65degree temps, little to no breeze, 168 grain Hornady BTHP...it measures just under 1.5". nothing to write home about but most of that was my fault. The rifle is going to shoot great. I shot a 3 round group just before this one that measured well under an inch but it was on the cardboard so I didn't save it. This is going to be a great gun once I learn to drive it a little better. 5 rounds (looks like 4 but double check the middle hole):

Re: My new 700 XCR Compact Tactical

Looks great. The XCR compact tactical is a great starting platform. With the right match ammo, you should shrink those groups down to around 3/4"!
