I have a new RCBS neck sizing die and used it for the first time today. I tried to picture it the best i could but the neck die scratched/grooved the neck.

Is this normal? And will it hurt anything?

Thanks for the help.

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

i did take the die apart and look at it. i couldnt see why it would do that. i pulled a rag through it and pushed a nylon brush through it as well. i am using rcbs case lube, but i dont usually put it on the neck. Should i? I roll it on the lube pad and the brush the inside of the neck with lube on a nylon brush.

thanks,

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

I had the exact same problem with a brand new Redding die. Redding refused to replace it after they inspected it ...They said it is not a manufacturing defect "yeah right" . I used a small strip of 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper soaked in light oil wrapped around a wooden dowel and polished the inside of the neck area of the die ... Smooth as silk now .

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

clean the die with bore cleaner, you might have to soak it overnight to remove the brass that is imbedded in it, shit can the RCBS lube, get some imperial sizing wax, and yes you should have lubed the neck.

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

The scratches you see are from where brass has sheared away due to lack of lube, I did the samething, it's part of the learning process, load it and go, but not super hot.

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

Mine too. Never had the problems with other dies. I might go back to them. Not lube related. Not with the other dies. Cleaned as described above. Still scratches. I think small defects in the bushings. For $175,I'd think all the problems had been resolved.Me and my bushings may be parted. I don't understand where the learning process goes, 427 C? Educate me. I may try Magua's fix. Otherwise, back to real dies.

You can try and remove the stem, plug that end and invert the die, adding copper solvent to it and give it a day or so.

I bought a brand new Hornady 338LM sizing die and it etched a beautiful picket fence around my necks and it was brand spanking new. I even sent it back to them with an example and they said that they polished it up, but it still does it. I've moved on to Redding bushing dies.

I had an RCBS 223 basic dohickey that got some galling in the necks and did faint lines. I polished it up with some sandpaper (hard to do) and it helped a little bit.

Best bet is to try some copper solvent and disolve any brass particals that might be there. If the neck is dinged, this won't help.

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

I lube my necks and I polished the bushing with a lapping compound and a Dremel until the bushing was shiney. Mine were dull to begin with. I seem to need less lube now on the necks and I don't gall my brass anymore. The sandpaper idea may also work. Check to see if you have copper buildup on the bushing as well. I saw little stripes on my bushing before I cleaned it.

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

I cleaned the die and then i put some fine steel wool on a brass brush and then chucked it up in the drill press. I ran press at low speed and polished the inside of the die. I also lubed my cases well and i had no problems this time.

however i think i want to try the dies with bushings. how do i know what size bushing to use?

can you get lapping compound at home depot/lowes? if so what part of the store is it in?

Thanks again,

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

Don't do lapping compound from Lowe's. Way too coarse. Go to your local AutoZone. They have packets of very fine, (read very, very, very fine) finishing papers. 800 to 2000 grit. Get a bronze brush about the inside diameter of your bushing. Cut a 1" strip of the 1000 grit paper and wrap around the brush. Run it in your bushing for a few seconds...about 20 to 30. Do the same with the 2000 grit. Clean it up and size away, Soooooooo slick. JMHO

Re: neck sizing die scratching/grooving neck

The lapping compound I used was LusterLap 3 micron diamond dust. It is made to polish glass.

On bushing size, take a loaded round and get several bushings around that size (maybe one larger and a few smaller). It is brass specific, so you may want to get a large assortment. I think I bought 8-9 bushings in 0.001" increments to cover LC brass down to Winchester brass. Don't be cheap and buy 1-2 bushings.
