Looking for a quote that deals with the speed of sound variance as a function of temperature, but I can't seem to find it. Yes I own the text (and have read it) and yes I've contacted Bryan directly via PM....both were unsuccessful.....but I do remember reading the line in there somewhere...

Any help? Just a page reference would be great.....don't need the text.

Thanks Lindy, yep I already consulted wikipedia and have the info, but I really wanted a tangible quote from a text to use side by side with wikiwisdom. I'm sure someone knows what page I need....

Not seeing it in Litz' book, but the information in the "speed in ideal gases and in air" section on Wikipedia agrees completely with what is in my graduate aerodynamics textbook.

I'll have to add that equation to the second edition.

For easy reference, here's the ICAO definition for speed of sound (neglecting the small affect of humidity)

sos = 49.0223 * sqrt(Tf + 459.67)

Where:
sos is speed of sound in fps
Tf is temperature in degrees Fahrenheit

In standard conditions, the ICAO sos is:

49.0223 * sqrt(59 + 459.67) = 1116.5 fps

At other temperatures:
0 degrees F: 1051 fps
20 degrees F: 1074 fps
40 degrees F: 1096 fps
60 degrees F: 1118 fps
80 degrees F: 1139 fps
100 degrees F: 1160 fps
