I have been looking at the 10FP (308) and the 10FP Precision Carbine. My main question is will there be any advantage of the 24" barrel vs the 20" barrel in accuracy over distance?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your quick replies.

There is about a $50 dollar difference between the two rifles, but that still doesnt help me decide which one I want. From what I have read and researched, the Savage model 10 Tactical series are very accurate out of the box.

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

The 20" will be a little lighter and balance out a little better. They are still pretty heavy but if you are not going to use it hunting it shouldn't make a difference.

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

the DBM that comes with the precision is well worth the extra 50$ The precision also comes with the accustock where as the 10fp doesn't, but if you intend to get a different stock it really doesnt matter.

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

I looked at the Accustock this weekend and I think I am sold on that one.

Now I guess I should start thinking about scopes now???

I think about $300-$400 for a start. Have to do a little more research on what power of scope also.

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

I am certainly no expert, however I purshased my .308 carbine about 3 months ago to build as a sub-sonic suppressed rifle. I just got it threaded last month and put a brake on it and untill I get a suppressor. Shoots about 1 MOA with 175's. Details below, but Overall a great rifle for about $700.
I bought this rifle for three specific reasons.....

Detachable box mag+++ super big plus and works well, correct fit and does not rattle, seems to function well, can single load on top of empty mag.
AccuStock+++ is certainly better than the old savage stocks. Seems to be very stiff and rigid around the action, a bit weak out towards the forearm by the bipod stud, digital finish on stock scratches off easily, yet touches up well with Krylon.
Barrel twist & contour+++ 1-10" twist to support heavy sub-sonics and 20" mid weight countour is rigid enough to support suppressor.

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

Well, I didnt get the rifle yet, but while I was in Dicks today they did have the Savage Mod 10FCP-K for $699... Now what Pisses me off is I was going to go through a Police supply and they were giving me a discount (military/LE) for the Precision Carbine for the same price and they sell the 10FCP-K for more money.

When I called I told them that Dicks has better prices than the discount they were giving me... of course thats their prices and so on.

So I think Im just going to get the 10FCP. I really wasn't feeling the ACU pattern on the stock (No offense Army members).

Don't feel bad about the pattern. As soon as I get mine, it will be sporting a new camo job prior to even having a round chambered!! Other than that... I love that little carbine and can hardly wait!!

Re: Need advice from the experts on Savage

Ive had the Savage 10FP actually three of them and they are very nice I really like the handeling of the 20 in, but I upgraded to a Remmington R5 Mil Spec 24 in stainless and I would highly recommend you look at that rifle. If the rifle is for hunting use I suggest you look at the Tikka and the Sako A7 both of which DO NOT LEAVE THE FACTORY UNLESS THEY SHOOT UNDER 1 in at 100 yds. I really prefer stainless for a hunting gun and darker finishes for tactical but you can take a stainless and have it coated by Walter Birdsong in Black Green tan or brown T about 6 months wait. As for scopes if you are looking for a hunting scope you might think about a Leupold FX3 6x42 with longrange duplex. Note: for a little more you can custom order them with either the M1 knobs or the covered style target knobs from Leupold Custom shop. There isnt enough moa in the scope to get you to extreme long range but should be plenty to get to 600 yds and you can have them engrave the knobs with balistic info like Kenton Ind does but cheaper. Other that that I would suggest you look at some of the Super Sniper scopes the 10x is very popular and reasonably priced and the 3-9x42 FFP mil mil at $599.95 is a smoking hot deal on a really tough scope with awesome glass and enough internal adjustment for that to never be an issue.

Thanks for the info, Does Tikka say which ammo and what grain they are using? I really want to buy something in a 308 tactical. My bud is telling me to save my money and look at the H&R Survivor.
