Need advice ... which 7mm PRC?

Considering a move to the 7mm PRC and would like some advice on which rifle(s) to consider and which rifle(s) to avoid. Are there good "off the shelf" rifles out there or should I pay for a custom build? I would like to stay in the $2500 -$5000 range if possible. Is there a good selection of handloading components? Target shooting only - no hunting.

I have always gotten good advice on the Hide, so let me thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

7prc is pretty new so there’s probably not many factory rifles available. What you could do is buy a Tikka in any magnum cartridge and re-barrel it

But, you said this was a target rifle only. And your budget is plenty to afford a custom build. The ARC Coup De Grace is the new hot shit on the block and would make a great starting point. ARC sells complete rifles but I’m not sure about getting their rifle chambered in 7prc.

There are literally thousands of ways to configure a custom build that only you can decide on

Reloading is going to depend on brass availability, like always.

Hornady site points out that if you have a .300 Win Mag, you can change barrels. Their 7 mm PRC page also shows all the companies that are making 7 mm PRC rifles.

I just got one from a builder in new Braunfels, Texas. Couple of friends of mine have been getting guns from them for years. Hill country rifle,’s. I spoke with them on the phone and talked about a build, and could not be more pleased. First time out at 200 yards off a 10 year old bench Rear bag and bipod shot a .855 of an inch, actually 203 yards no time behind the gun until then. That group was the number 4,5 and 6th shot behind that rifle for me. A 20 inch barrel. i’ve always been a fairly light caliber guy 65 Creedmoor, 17 hornets, 6 mm Creedmoor, etc. I’m I’m going on an elk hunt this year and being told 700 yd shots are available. Yes I could’ve brought a 270,but wanted something with just a little bit more ass on it. This weekend loads will be worked up and we’ll see where I end up. hoping for 2900 or 29 and some change, but factory ammunition accuracy is astounding. They also promise you 10 boxes of ammo as well as getting the same lot that your group was shot from. All guns have a half MOA or better before shipped. Also, I believe the box says VX5, that’s actually a VX6 on the rifle.

if $5,000 is the top of your budget then def build one. so many options

get some Peterson brass and some 175-195gr bullets and load away

I purchased a Proof Research MTR Elevation In 7mm PRC. $3800. I topped it with Leupold Mk 5 HD. Here are my 5 shot groups with factory Hornady Precision Hunter at 100 meters.

You could get all the your parts together and send them out for chambering ,bedding and assembly. Or just get a barreled action done and bolt it down in a chassis, staying within budget. As far a 7 PRC I would want a reamer used that has a slightly larger base for reloading, avoid clickers after a few firings. I have the Manson M1 which is similar to the AW2 version. Either would cut the ideal chamber if you are wanting to load your own.

I will echo the above post. My smith has his own reamer that gets rid of the clicker issue. I built the wife one and I’ve been very happy thus far. Waiting on Peterson brass to come in for hers. I’m also putting together a budget semi custom for my dad with a 22 inch barrel on a tikka and xlr chassis. So far factory ammo has been extremely accurate. Below is shots 4,5,6 at 100 yards with factory ammo in a cheap flimsy stock. It’s in a McMillan now while we wait for her manners to come in. My vote build! You will be happier in the long run. The picture of her gun is pre Hawkins m5 which it has now.
