Need help... Donut?

I'm helping a friend load up some 270 Win and if I run the ram all the way up to crimp then the necks are crushed (wrinkled) and the shoulders have a donut.

What am I doing wrong or is this RCBS die bad?

Thanks in advance.

"What am I doing wrong or is this RCBS die bad?"

You don't need to crimp a .270 and you've probably got the seater die set down a half turn too far.

Re: Need help... Donut?

back the die off 1 1/4 turn and use the seat depth screw to get seat depth . you are over ingauging the crimp built in to your die and the 270 dose not need a crimp

Re: Need help... Donut?

Okay... So I will basically hold the die up high enough so the crimp is not engaged.

Here's my nex question - I also reloaded some 243 for him and just noticed that there is a small "donut" on top of the shoulder at the neck intersection. The bullet still chambers but is it okay to shoot or should I scrap them??

Re: Need help... Donut?

Most seaters have a crimp ring simply to give us the option to do so if we should wish; it's not to suggest crimping 'should' be done. Many new guys over do the crimping and get the same results you have.

Been there done that!

Just to show you your margin for error I don't need to crimp my 416Rigby (400 grains at 2700fps).

Good luck!
