In a few weeks, I am going to drive from Texas to Lake George NY. On the way up there, I am going to stop in Ohio and pick up a few guns from my uncles collection. One Rifle, and one handgun. I will be in NY for a week or so...

What do I need to know before taking a handgun into NY state?

I will be driving across Pennsylvania on the way up there, and down I84 on the way home. (avoiding NJ)

This is why I dont like going any further North than Tennessee!

Re: Need help from a New Yorker

It's been a long time since I've been through all the "fine print" on this matter. But if I recall correctly, unless you have a NYS pistol permit(or some sort of State/Federal LEO status presumably)you cannot legally possess a handgun within New York's borders EXCEPT for competition in an NRA or similarly sanctioned shooting comp/event. And then it's a come-shoot-go type of thing.

In other words, what you are proposing will almost certainly put you afoul of the law. There are a couple NY LEO's on here though("Slapchop" is one) who may be able to shed more official light on it for you.

Or...the actual laws themselves:

The other guys nailed it, unless you have a NY pistol permit, and they don't have non resident ones, you won't legally be able to have the pistol inside the state. Is there any way you could pick up the guns on the way back home instead?

Re: Need help from a New Yorker

Super Bee, as others have said, if you're not DRIVING/PASSING thru New York State, you need to have some form of a pistol permit/license that has been issued by New York State in order to legally posses a pistol here. Even worse, if you plan on visiting New York City, the same will apply to any rifle or shotgun you might have.

You might be better off just shipping the weapon back to you from an FFL in Ohio OR just picking it up on your way back after you leave NY.

I know its a long shot but I've heard it done before, you can always call the New York State Police or the cops in the jurisdiction which you plan on staying for a week and inquiring on whether or not they would "safeguard" the pistol for you during your stay. Truth be told though, I'd be a bit hesitant on doing this myself if I were in your shoes because you NEVER know who you're going to get on the other end of the line.

If picking up the pistol on your way BACK home does not work for you and you have no other alternatives, send me a PM. I might be able to help you out.

On the bright side, Lake George is some real purty country this time of year......

I would imagine the bugs are just about right, about now though...if you have anything outdoor planned.

Chigger spray, and don't say I didn't warn ya.......
