Need help understanding spotting scope capabilities

Can you guys help me get a realistic expectation for spotting scopes spotting hits on paper? How far is realistic for a Vortex Viper or Razor scope? Is getting a 60x spotting scope a waste because of mirage?

The scope would be used exclusively to spot hits in a range setting.

This opens up a HUGE hole, one I just crawled out of.

If you are using the scope in adverse conditions, black paper targets, heavy mirage, hunting trophies, etc, those scopes won't get you there. There is a reason why the expensive scopes are such. However, for just range use and spotting shots on white paper targets during good weather/conditions, I would expect you to be able to see between 200-300 yards.

If you are lucky enough to have one near you, see if there is a shop that sells birdwatching gear. They'll let you try scopes outside, and you'll get an idea of what you're looking through.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve got the Viper coming from B&H, but I’ve read some unfortunate things in other places about its capability. I can always return it if need be.
