I'm starting with a matched upper and lower from SI Defense. Im using it as a shtf rifle and gonna hunt with it to distances of up to 600 yards. Im not really concerned with cost, just accuracy (not a bench rifle) and weight. Im thinking i want a good 16 barrel but 18 works too. Rainier has some in stock. Any ideas which? Which BCG? Buffer? Point me in the right directions please. Thanks

I would get one of their ultra match or super select barrels in 18inch with a rifle gas system, if you are looking for off the shelf. I was not too happy with the quality of DPMS style carrier (just returned one to them because of poor machining) So i would go with an Armalite BGC, a buffer/ spring from heavy buffers , regular mil spec buffer extension, Geissele SSA-E trigger and a sws handguard. Then install optic of choice and butt stock of choice. Otherwise, I would suggest getting a custom barrel made, but that is going to be a 600+ cost and could take weeks or months.

carbon fiber wrapped barrel, carbon fiber forend, or flute the barrel and don't get a light contour since then you suffer accuracy. Go with the 18in just because (IMO) I like it better. use pmags, and that's about all I can think of

You'll want an adjustable gas block and a JP LMOS carrier (.25lb saving). The apex handguard is one of the lightest. A MOE stock or ACE ultralight stock (half pound saving over an A2). If budget permits, a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. If you can get your hands on one, a Noveske barrel and then dimple it by Marvin Pitts. They're 2lb 9/10oz and you can save a little under a half pound with the dimpling. The armalite BCGs are heavier than the DPMS carriers. Just an FYI.

+1 on Apex hand guards and Dimples. Though Marvin is hard to get a hold of , been trying for weeks.

POF has a 14.5 barrel with pinned muzzle device that a local sniper school has started using to teach with for engagements under 900 yards. Unless they have changed they were using fluted rock creek hbar barrels that were very effective at saving weight and maintaining accuracy. Personally that's what I would use with DD rails. Making shft the primary concern and hunting secondary. JSE had NB coated bcg's in stock as of last week if you don't want to wait for a JP bcg

Those NIB BSG's suck.... they are like a fine file. here are some photos from one I just returned.

Rainer / Harris / 762 industries

LMT 308 carrier rail - Armalite is smooth as silk too.

Wow that machining sucks on the bolt carrier. I have bought a few through JSE and never seen anything like that but with the way factories are focused on quantity not quality right now; can't say I'm completely surprised. After a rush has started seems to be the worst time to build a gun.

I got one of young manufacturing's nm bolt carries - it is top notch - but not lite at all

The Troy trx non railed hand gaurds are very light but the rails they give you to screw on are steel and I personally didn't like the fit. Personally I'd focus on sift first and take the extra few onces of a rails but that is right there are other options that can save weight.

I am pretty sure JSE is getting them from the same place everyone is.. I got a replacement carrier and its almost the same... I can't get Youngs to even get back to me about ordering one of theirs. I would rather use a JP bolt and DPMS hardchrome carrier for the moment.

Ok heres what I have ordered so far. I have the SI Defense matched upper and lower, Jp Low mass carrier and bolt, Jp Silent captured spring, Ace skelotonized stock, Phase 5 extended bolt release, an giessele ssa e trigger, and a Rainier ultramatch 16" barrel. Should i call Rainier and have them swap that out for a Noveske 14.5 barrel they have in stock? Im also gonna order the syrac ordinance adjustable gas block. What do you guys think so far? What would you guys chose for the remaining parts?

I think that's a great start. Adjustable gas block is a very good idea. If the Noveske was 16", I'd say get the Noveske hands down. If you're fine with losing 1.5", then go with the Noveske. It has a better reputation of being consistently accurate (less chance of a dud).

Just to add, if you are not big on rails, the PRI Rifle Length forearm is 13oz without rails (18oz with the 8" top rail and 3 small rails). A sling stud can be added directly to the bottom so you can attach a harris bipod directly without an adapter and added weight. Fit and finish of the PRI forearms is excellent. I really like the rail.
