Hey guys what's up. I'm new to the forums and just would love you opinion on which rifle I should buy. My father and cousin are hunters and I'm planning on getting a rifle and going with them next year. They are bow hunters though so they wont be much help in making this decision.

I'm a big fan of semi-auto and would like your input on which of the four rifles listed would be the best to go with. To be honest I have listed them in order of least favorite to favorite starting with the M1A. But I need to know which one is the best. Obviously it still comes down to how good I am at shooting it though. Thank you.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Out of those four, I recommend going with the DPMS simply because once you have it, you're likely going to want to modify and improve it. The availability of parts and variations you can do with that platform are almost without limit. The rest of them will leave you wanting more but unable to give.

Welcome to the Hide.

Ya I was checking out mods and DPMS has the best.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Just want to add that the Kel Tec RFB is practically impossible to find at the moment.

The FNAR breakdown process looks terrible.

The M1A and anything that goes on it s crazy expensive, and I dont like the scope mount options.

I've been considering the DPMS as well.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Well I guess I've made up my mind. i just got back from looking at one and they are so sweet. I love how heavy they are. Good for recoil. I'll probably still get a compensator for it though.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Good choice, going for the DPMS. As others have stated above, the options are endless when modifying the AR platform. The DPMS will serve you well. Enjoy!

P.S.- Now all you need is a NightForce NXS to mount on top!

Thanks. But I dont really want to spend a thousand plus dollars on a scope. I'll probably go with one of those VISM center beam scopes.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Great choice on the Dpms. I just received my upper I ordered from Dpms, I ordered it with the black in flutes and the Miculek comp and it looks awesome. Hopefully it shoots as good as it looks.

Ok sweet I'll it out. Thank you.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

As indicated the DPMS would be the better choice. As far as scopes, Buckeye's suggestion about the Sightron is a good one. I have one and I was impressed by the scope given the cost. The Zeiss Conquest 3-9x gets a lot of praise for its quality and cost. Weaver and Super Sniper might be worth checking out too. Good luck, have fun and welcome.

So basically when I'm done it will look pretty close to this.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

I thought you said this was going to primarily be a hunting rifle....

Skip the shelf grip and get an ERGO or MIAD. That shelf will just get in the way and it really doesn't have much non-tacticool purpose anyhow.

The PRS buttstock is good but heavy. While it helps balance out a .308, it's not my favorite when trekking the TN hills.

The rear monopod is personal preference, but not really necessary. In my opinion, you can use a rear bag and be both faster and more stable.

As for the bipod, get an Atlas if you have the money, or a Harris if you're on a budget.

I am using it for hunting but I would like to have these mods or maybe the ones you suggested because I dont like the look of the stock rifle. Plus I would love to learn how to been a good sniper.

Are there any internal mods I should consider getting. Such as 2 stage trigger exc?

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

I'll second the SWFA SS 3-9X42. Lots of features like FFP and mil/mil on a quality optic. The hide gets you a 10% discount if you use the SSHIDE code when you order. I've got them on a LMT MWS and a M1A NM, could not be more pleased out to 800 yards. Have fun.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

Damn, I can feel it getting hot in here from the coming flames...

OK bud, I'm going to be nice here because others will flame the hell out of you. Take this advice and use it or tell me to screw off; it makes no difference to me, but I'm done here after this.

A sniper is a professional employed in the military or law enforcement that has received the appropriate training, skills, and appointment to be such. It's a term you may be misusing here. I think the phrase you're looking for is "precision marksman" or something of that nature.

I for one, and almost everyone else on here will absolutely ignore you if you start saying you want to be a "sniper" but show no interest in doing it on a professional level.

If you want to be a sniper, then join the military or enter law enforcement. Otherwise, keep the sniper dreams when the shit hits the fan to another site, but not this one.

As for your new rifle you wish to put together, it is absolutely not a fashion show or how cool you can make it look. It's about function, not fashion. If you want to know how to make it look cool with more crap hanging off of it than a circus wagon, go somewhere else.

Thank you pointblank4445 for the video.

ETA: I guess I wasn't nice. Oh well...

I mounted the ergo grip/shelf on my POF and I've found that it allows for better hold and control of the rifle.

The PRS buttstock weighs less than 2lbs and that includes the rifle length buffer, tube, and spring. Hardly what I would consider as being <span style="font-style: italic">heavy</span>.

The monopod offers more in terms of precision than a bag; whether you're on the bench, prone, or in the field.

However, as you stated in your post, it all comes down to <span style="font-style: italic">personal preference</span>.

The_Ninja_X, you want your rifle to be <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="text-decoration: underline">functional</span></span> and if you add accessories that offer little in the way of functionality, they will only become a hinderance and you'll have wasted money.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Here is my setup -</span>

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

I am just waiting to see the faces on you father and cosins when you show up to the annual bowhunt with your tricked out AR 10!

lol ya I know right.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

I was used to seeing that video but under the Angry Pharmacy listing on youtube. lol That's hilarious though.

OP, how are you going to hunt with your father and cousin if you're carrying a modern firearm and they are going archery style? Here where I'm at, those are two different seasons.

Re: Need help with rifle selection.

If I were in your situation I would read the hunting side of SH, then I would never let anyone on Earth know that I have a shotgun like that. Sorry, I'm trying to get it all out so I can start next year as less of an asshole. Good Luck!
