hi guys, im new at this game and need some help.

what formula do i use for wind?

i am currently working off:

range/ wind velocity
---------------------- = Minutes of full value windage.
C

Constant

1-500 = 15
600 = 14
700 = 13
etc.

every time i do this i miss by some stupid ammount.

i have tried this in the field and on simulators and it never works.

what is the correct formula to figure wind?

Re: need help with wind

First question is; "How do you adjust for distance"?

What is your rifle's dope or how much elevation is needed at various range and how did you get to that conclusion?

It's easier and more worthwhile in small steps.

Re: need help with wind

That's a formula for wind holds in MOA which was developed for .308 Winchesters firing a 175 grain Sierra Matchking around 2600 fps. It works pretty well for a full-value crosswind.

However, it will be different for a different load, and, of course, the wind rarely favors us by being precisely at 90 degrees to the line of the shot, and it almost never is constant over the full distance of a long shot.

Not to mention that the wind we know at the position we are shooting from is not the wind where the bullet lives, because the maximum ordinate on a 1000 yard shot with a .308 is about 12 feet above the ground, where the wind is stronger than it is on the ground.

It's a place to start.

If you want something which is more precise, if you are shooting a different load, use a ballistic program whose validity with your load you have tested in the field. Then solve it for the constant.

Or, you could take the suggestion already offered, and go shoot in the wind.

Bingo.

I read the wind with a Kestrel. Watch the environment. Input that into my ballistic computer if I have it.

But in reality my "guesstimates" are usually just as close. I always strive to find new techniques, but I have yet to find one better than feeling the wind on my face, watching what it does to the weeds, bushes, trees and mirage. Then seeing what it does to the bullet.

Re: need help with wind

The best use of a Kestrel is when you are not shooting, to learn to judge the sound and feel of the wind. Judge the wind, then measure it with the Kestrel. Repeat.

Pretty soon you will learn to judge the wind pretty accurately without the Kestrel, which is useful because the wind changes too quickly when you're shooting for the Kestrel to be useful then.

When you get it figured out...let me know!! Seriously, time is better spent shooting on windy days-at ranges longer than 100 yards. I find that wind is far too dynmic to take the time to run a formula. (that's what a spotter is for!!)

That's nice, unless you don't have a spotter. Then it would be a good idea to have figured out in advance how to handle it.

One aid is a wind card. The one below had rows of range in yards, with columns of wind in MPH. The holds are in mils.
