I'm thinking of getting a M-223 for use on a Remington Model 700 w/ 26" heavy barrel. It has the HS Precion Stock. This is a recent aquisition for my duaghter. Will be used for groundhogs and some steel out to 3-400 yds. Maybe further on occasion-just for fun.

All research states that this scope is ballistically calibrated for a 55 grain polymer tipped bullet traveling at 3240 fps. I'm looking at having the 26 inch barrel cut back to 20 inches. My daughter is 5' 2" and about 110 lbs. It's balance point is just too far forward for her right now. I don't think it will be too hard to still get to that speed, but if anyone has any input to the contrary I'd like to hear it.

I'm wondering if this scope has any voodoo built into it that accounts for the 2.5" AR sight/bore difference in it that will affect it's built in elevation adjustments for mounting it as low as possible on a 700. Nikon's AR mount has 20 MOA built into it.

Does anybody have any input on the different reticles that are offered? I can't really tell how much the BDC 600 circles cover at a distance.

Any input on these scopes will be appreciated. I'm looking to keep it around $300 for now, because I don't really know how much she will be shooting and I'm going to have a few $$$ in getting the stock and barrel shortened, mounts, rings, etc.

I appreciate any input. Thanks

Re: Need input on Nikon's m-223

My friend has one of these on his JP AR-15 and we were shooting out to 600 this past weekend. He was shooting 75 gr black hills ammo with the bdc reticle thats calibrated for 55gr bullets. Nikon has a program on their website that allows you to input your data, or data they have based on what you are shooting. Once you have your data in the program it tells you what magnification, and which part of the reticle to use at different ranges. Everything we shot at he hit 12"x18" steel on the first hit. I was impressed how well it worked. I'm a fan of a good drop chart and a MOA or MIL scope but if you have the data with you this seems to be the ticket for getting it done quickly. Oh and the wind data given on the Nikon website was correct too, we were shooting between 5-10 mph cross winds all day.

Never had any experience with that scope but I have shot extensively with Leupold's Mark AR scope - same price range and specs. It comes down to personal preference. The BDC reticles are good enough to get you pretty darned close, but dont expect them to be dead nuts all the time, there are a variety of factors that play into external ballistics and Nikon simply chooses a happy medium and develops their reticles based on that. I prefer to dial my scope for distance shooting, this allows you to get the trajectory dead on and you dont have a BDC reticle cluttering up your scope. Both Nikon and Leupold have BDC turrets available for their respective AR specific scopes. Hope that helps a bit!

Nikon's 3-12x42SF M-223 Series is available with Nikoplex or BDC 600 reticle. There is no reason why you cannot mount this scope very low on the Remington 700, as the scope is still built for normal applications. Typically, the BDC reticle will index out to about 600 yards with 100 (or 50) yard increments using their hash-marks. I do not find the BDC "circles" at all distracting, or feel that they cover too much of the viewing area. Also, Nikon's Rapid Action Turrets make returning zeroing a snap!

i've used this scope on a similar setup, it works fine. On the one i set up and sighted in, we used the 3-12 with the bdc reticle, warne 2 piece base for a remington 700 and leupold prw low rings. give me a call if you have any questions
