The used Savage package I was looking at here is being traded.
One of my other choices is a Savage 10FP with a Choate Tactical stock, factory DBM, over size bolt knob, yada yada yada. It's at Cabela's for $699.00.
I called Cabela's today after reading a post someone made about it being removed from their website. When I called they said it was being discontinued by Cabela's. I asked if it was a slow seller and he said no- they sold a lot of them. he thinks Savage is going up on the price and Cabela's is trying to keep the price low.
I had him hold it for me, and it will be held until close of business tonight.
My question is should I get my butt up there and buy this Savage tonight, or take a chance someone else will buy it this weekend and keep looking around for a used rifle?

I have until 9pm to pick it up.

Jim

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

I purchased a Savage 10FLCP-K in .308 brand new off Gun Broker for $689.00 earlier this month. Don't know if this info helps, but their are deals out there if you look.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

there is no glory in new savages.....stay the course for a used rig...its TAX time, and traditionally there are deals to be had HERE on the Hide.......trust me.......

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Have to agree with unforgiven that the price sounds good and you have a deadline. I have a 10FCP-HS and have been pleased so far.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

too much money for one with a choate stock either get the super cheap plastic stock and upgrade later or get at least an accustock,hs prec. or mcmillan version you won't regret it I promise. the choate feels like a expensive piece of tupperware compared to the rest of the quality stocks.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Hmmm. It sounds like I should pass this up.
The only deadline I have is that they will only hold it until close of business tonight. There is a chance someone else will buy it this weekend, and it's the last one in stock. Since it's being discontinued it's the last one at Cabelas period.

Is the Choate a bad stock, or is it just not in the same class as HS? I know Mcmillon is the best- right?

The new Savage rifles are coming in short action, with factory DBM and oversize bolt knobs. That seems like it would save some money down the road, unless the Choate is that crappy.

If I wait I can buy a remmy if one comes up. I do like the idea of finding a good package with a scope.

Sooo- wait?

Jim

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

no one thats had that stock has a complaint about it that i have read here. i base fp with no dbm was bought by brettsass for 569 and tax. it had no dbm at all. so if you want a mag, its $289 plus inletting to all CDI. for 699, you get DBM and can use SSS 9 rounders. i say buy it, its better than 569 + 200-250 for another stock plus DBM and the knob. if you ask me its a deal.

the 10fcp-k is an accustock model with a brake. there are no other stocks for that model yet. you will have to live with that. it is DBM, but shooting with a brake has its plus/minus too. i saw get up there tonight or first thing in the am and buy it and a decent scope and you will be shooting before sundown tomorrow

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

I have exactly $900.00 right now to play with. I can't get a scope, base and rings- just the rifle. I will have more in a couple of weeks- sooner if I sell one of my Swiss K31s.

Jim

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

$700+ tax and do you have any scopes? $200 will get you a 3200 elite, $400 will get you a used 4200 elite...

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

I do have an older Simmon's- from about 15 years ago, that's 6x-20x. It's a 1" tube. but I have 1" rings. All I would need is a base. I even have some ammo.

Jim

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Actually I have more scopes. I forgot about an old Redfield Widefield, and a bunch of old Bushnell scopes I have.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Saw your post too late to be of any help, but I hope you get it. Let us know how you make out.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

i just sold my 20 moa EGW, lol. hey i think midway has it on sale and optics planet has free shipping, its about the same either way. but get the 20 moa. EGW has a steel one too if you feel spendy. dont get all antsy now and slap some 2 piece stuff on there, lol.

so... pictures?

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

I will check Midway and others tomorrow. I have a C&RFFL so I get a discount from them.
I have a Larue mount for my AR15 that I might put up for trade for a mount and/or rings. I bought it and decided against a scope on it.
Pics will come tomorrow.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Damn...I'm going to be selling my Savage here in about two weeks. Oh well, going to try to sell it as a package anyway, probably more than you wanted to spend. Shoot the hell out of it and enjoy, they're good rifles.

+1 Savage makes a great rifle. I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Congradulations, and happy shooting!

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Just got my first Savage, an FCP-K, and I'm pretty impressed with it. Very smooth action, solid feel, and good balance for a heavy tac rifle. The molding on the Accustock was pretty decent too. Laser accurate with Match ammo. Even my shaky ass is shooting sub MOA or just at MOA out to 350. It makes me seem way better than I am. And the Savage brake is awesome. Between that and the weight this thing is like shooting an AR. Gonna try it at 600 this weekend, I hope. I think I like Savage. May get another and put a McMillan on it for my bud to shoot.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Just so you know, there is NO DIFFERENCE inthe action used in a rifle with an accustock, a rifle used in a choate, HS precision or McMillan stock. They are all the same action, the difference is the stock.
If you have a DBM model Savage in an accustock, it will fit n the DBM HS Precision stock etc... They did nothing special to the action.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

oh good god..........savages are like minuets....they are fun to watch and look good whilst they prance and dance about, and can be a tad flashy....but in the end you are in the same place you started from and got no where.....

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

fdkay, i agree. my only point was why spend the money on an accustock and then not use the accustock? its more than a non-accustock. my point was if someone were going to swap stocks, they would be better off buying a bone stock 10fp or 10fcp and then getting a new stock or choosing a factory HS, McM or choate. and if a guy wants CDI bottom metal, skip the 10fcp and get the 10fp...or sell off the DBM. but thats hard because i dont think its adaptable to a non-DBM 10fp. not positive though

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Spoken like a true dinosaur! Give it a rest already please. Savage is kicking tail in the rifle industry for a reason. Quality, easy barrel changes, more and more high quality pre-fit barrels that you don't have to wait on as a rule 6 weeks to 6 months to receive, more and more accessories as they continue to dominate sales figures. In fact I understand they are now the largest selling rifle company in the US, maybe the world. They are successful for listening to the shooters, taking care of their customers and besides that everything is made in USA, by citizens! Is there better? Sure if you want a custom action, custom built rifle. Otherwise, no comparison for the dollar when you factor in accuracy out of the box and ease of modification by the owners.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

funny..........if you would get the fuck up off the couch.....you would be absolutely gob-smacked at the severe lack of any said uber rifles in the line-up and winners circle......they may dominate sales figures.....but they seem to be going on the sale rack or under the bed in the children's room........i don't see them in the FIVE state area i play in.....

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Wow I just joined this forum today. Can any veteran members tell me if this kind of lunacy is common here?

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Boltrippers is no lunacy, and if this is your first day, read more and judge less will be my advise, unless you are here for the wrong reason.

I respect boltrippers' experience and knowledge, although I do have to admit that it took me a while to start getting his humor.

SH has it's sad, opinionated twats who generally add nothing but ridicule and outrageous generalizations, just like every other forum. But there's also ton of good info here and a whole lot of good people. You'll learn soon enough who's divorced and sitting in their parents' basement jerking off to tranny porn and be able to differentiate them from those who are graciously sharing their considerable knowledge.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

come on guys, we all have opinions and they vary widely. lets just respect eachother and not lower this to a schoolyard slap fight name calling thing. its not good for the site, puts off members both old and new. take the name calling to PM and keep the threads on topic. please. thanks

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

That wouldn't be any fun at all.

Svelt ... it's a good place. But many of us are ex-mil and have a double dose of wise-ass.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

I have the same rifle... 10FP in the Choate tactical stock... I bought it when it was on sale at cabelas for $650.

I can tell you that for the price I highly doubt you'd find a compareable rifle.. for starters.. the McMillan that comes as a package deal w/ the 10FP is not bedded in any way... my friend has one, the Choate stock is aluminum block bedded. It is strong as hell since its probably 3/16" thick injection molded plastic, my friend chipped his McMillan pulling his bolt out.

As far as accuracy... w/ my best reloads I put a .284 MOA 4 shot group w/ an extreme spread of .560MOA because I flinched, for a $650 rifle... that in my opinion is not bad... I have done sub .5MOA at 350yds 5 shot groups and sub .7MOA at 600yds... I need more practice and I know I can get them tighter.

MIke.

Re: Need quick answer on Savage choice

Savage is tough act to follow over the past ten years. What is not to like unless you don't like excellent out of the box accuracy and the ability to change your own barrels in a matter of minutes with a few tools and retain excellent accuracy. Some people just can not get past the barrel nut. To each their own. The wealth of after market options, excellent factory customer service, innovative and overall, excellent operation.

Besides it is 100% manufactured and assembled right here in the USA by Americans. At least something of quality is still being made here at home.

You will find all kinds of lunacy here from time to time, but don't let it turn you away. You will also find volumes of knowledge based on experience, good advice from people who aren't trying to sell you anything, fellow shooters and places to shoot in your area that you might never have known about otherwise, some great reviews/trades/deals on equipment as well as answers to just about any question you might have about any thing that pertains to shooting (and some that don't). In addition to everything listed above, you will also find plenty of "characters", and that's not a bad thing.
Anywhere large groups of people congregate to discuss topics they are passionate about, heads are bound to butt once in a while. I am by no means a "veteran member", but in the short time I've been here, I've met some really good people, and learned more than I ever could have imagined I would.
This is a great forum. Welcome to it, and enjoy!
