Hello there everyone, as you can see I am new here. I have been just checking things out before I finally registered. I just have a few questions I would like to ask right now. I have just purchased a Remington 700 VTR chambered in .243. Im looking to get a scope. Being a college student my budget for the scope is around $400. Ill mostly be hunting groundhogs and a little target shooting with some friends. Everything should be well into the 400 yard range at the absolute most. I am new to the whole rifle thing and come from shooting archery. My question is what scope would you suggest? Along with rings and a base to match said scope. I have come to learn that there are many other great companies out there that can make better products at a cheaper price. Meaning you wont find them in a cabelas or bass pro catalog. Also is it possible to convert this rifle into a DBM? I would love having a detachable mag. Thanks guys. If you need more info just let me know.

I'm new too and have found the members here to be very helpful, but some get aggrevated with common questions like this that could easily be answered with a thorough search.

My advice would be search the optics forum, lots of info, and then ask anything you haven't been able to answer yourself.

Re: Need some advice please

I would get a set of Talley LW one piece rings and put a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 mildot reticle on it.

The scope has more than enough adjustent to get you out far enough, untill you need a 20MOA base then just sell the Talley rings which are highly desireable and but a canted picatanny base and soe Burris Extreme rings.

The Mil-dot reticle will help you if you ever shoot with an experienced shooter that calls out what you should correct in Mils.....you asked I suggest.

Best beginner scope

Very Simple Ring set up

Re: Need some advice please

Nikon scopes have great glass. Only draw back in my opinion is the total elevation is about 40 - 50. A 20 MOA cant base is a must. Other than that, Nikon scopes, especially the Monard series are very decent.

Would also venture to add Vortex as a potential option as well. I have a Viper on my 243 and must say I am very happy.

Re: Need some advice please

I had a Monarch and didn't like the feel of them...my 270WSM has a EGW 20 moa base on it and I 100 yard zero at the 3 verticle line below the 0 horizontal line.....damn near at the bottom of the elevation....that's why I say it has plenty of elevation for 400 yard shooting and soe more past that.

Re: Need some advice please

I love my Nikon scopes. I lean strongly toward the Monarch series. They cost more, but I feel that each dollar is spent better.

Recently handed my rifle over to a friend on a hunt when he could no longer see though his scope into the shadows. he could see quite well though my Monarch, and got the deer. (wasn't a great deer, but was his first and he didn't want to wait)

Re: Need some advice please

Welcome.

For a budget scope the Nikon Buckmaster isn't really that bad, nor is the entry-level Bushnell, both with Mildot reticle and both available at under $300.

I would get a Mil Dot reticle and, if you don't know how to already, learn to use Mils at the range and for hunting.

If it were me, I would get the basic 10x Super Sniper for $325, then sell it or move it to another rifle if I became dissatisfied with it, bored with it, or wanted to upgrade.

EGW makes a nice pic rail base for not much money. I have one and I use it.

Don't skimp on rings. I say: get Badgers, use them and keep them.

Re: Need some advice please

Thanks guys. Im gonna take all of this into consideration this week when ready to purchase. Looking like its gonna be a nikon scope. I really like the talley rings and base someone showed me.
