getting ready to build my first long range bolt gun. after much debate I decided on the 6.5.

I want to be able to shoot 1000yds but will see most of its time on my 650yd range. I am picking up a Remington 700 this week. I just want some suggestions on some good quality parts that will get me out to 1000yds. I have a friend that will be doing the work out of his gunsmith shop.

barrel- i'm looking at the kreiger but am open to suggestions. what contour and length should I get?
stock- i'm sure its just preference but I've been looking at b&c
trigger- the remmy has the xmark pro. should I have it worked on or just buy a trigger?

I am looking at about a $1500-$2000 budget on the gun without optic. the gun itself is $425 and the seekins bottom metal is $250 so lets say I have $1250 to play with.

I would say since you are talking of replacing the barrel, you would want to make sure your action is re machined for parallel and concentricity. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better program than chad dixon/ long rifle's accurizing going on in the group buy section. Keep the trigger stock until you find out its limitations. If you want to shoot 650 yards and out to 1000 I would not mess around with your friends shop, unless he really does do long range rifles for a living. maybe he is a pistol smith or general hunting rifle gunsmith? anyhow, you are running out of money real fast but if the gunsmith's lathe is not up to snuff or his skills aren't there, you are just throwing away your parts money anyway.

just my opinion.

he does do precision work but it is a hobby. I was looking at that group buy and would be interested. then have my buddy do the rest

PTG bottom metal, $100.
Barrel, $310-ish. You can't go wrong really. All the "name brand" barrel makers are of excellent quality.

I'm on the same path. Once I got my .308 MATEN built, I turned in my .308 700 to the gunsmith. He does this for a living, and he and his wife regularly win 1000 yard competitions with his own guns, so I gave him my action, a Krieger barrel, and told him to go to town on it and call me when he's doe.
